The State reports 38-year-old Steven Verren Baker was sentenced to serve 16 months in federal prison Monday for his role in trading rare turtles on the black market

He originally faced up to five years in prison but was given credit for helping authorities prosecute others. Prosecutors say Baker regularly trafficked in rare turtles in a scheme that involved turtle dealers in New York, Hong Kong, and the Carolinas.

Good!

Many turtle species are at risk throughout the world because of the exotic animal trade.

He'll be swimming with the turtles soon after he gets out of the slammer.

I’d have been more impressed if it was an actual turtle serving time.

These guys aren't selling pets to people that are taken care of in some rich person turtle paradise. They're selling rare, endangered turtles to weird Asians that eat them.

I'm good with this sentence.

Actually, most of the demand for the turtles is simply for pets. Apparently, having a pet turtle is a status symbol in a land where space for pets is very limited.

Not according to 60 Minutes I saw though...

The SHELLS are a status symbol after you've eaten them.

Well, that’s what I was told by the case agent on the related federal case here in New Orleans, and by the Chinese national that I supervised on bond.

It’s probable that 60 Minutes just made a bad assumption. Hell, to be honest, that’s what I assumed when I was assigned the case, that the Chinese were using the turtles for food or some whacky medicinal purpose like making your dick grow.
