Sir, you must not fly regularly. I have Precheck and still get asked to remove belts or shoes if they "get a hit" while walking through Xray. I fly with the same belt every single time BTW.
I also had to ask for a supervisor the other day because I have a TWIC card and not a REAL ID compliant DL. The employee had NO IDEA what a TWIC card was and that it was even issued by TSA.

If you are 75 or older, you don’t have to remove your shoes now !

I too refuse to get a real ID as I have a TWIC card. I flew in an airport that isn’t near any large industrial base and handed them my TWIC and the attendant was very confused. Called over his supervisor who saw it and chuckled at the attendant saying something like “better than a passport” or something like that.
It wasn’t an issue at all, just funny that TSA ID agents aren’t aware of the acceptable forms of ID

I would assume it has to do with their screening equipment. They’re still checking your shoes.

The last time I flew out of BR, they told me not to take them off. That had to be at least two years ago.

If you had put your TWIC number in the KTN spot when you booked initially you wouldn't have had this problem. Its not meant to show to the TSA agent.

I already don't have to do this at the Birmingham airport. DFW and SNA both require it though. Portland also.

Shoes and iPads are only a problem if you don’t give them $80 every 4 years. The money makes the threat go away

I have Precheck, but I wear heels most of the time, so I still have to take them off every time. I don't even try to go through and wait for the thing to ding anymore because I know it will. I just remove them to begin with.

or the rules could just be the same universally and the issues i'm talking about wouldn't be a problem. time getting through security is not a problem for me, it's being talked to like a child that gets annoying. but congrats on your tsa precheck. quite the accomplishment for you.

Yep, you can leave your belt and shoes on in the pre-check line. That is of course if your shoes and belt have zero metal on them. Who has a belt with no metal on it?

KTN is only to provide you with Precheck on your boarding pass. You must still show a TSA approved ID to fly domestically, one of which is a TWIC card which is provided by TSA after clearing a background check. In other words, it's better than a Real ID or Passport.
ID expect an employee of TSA to know what a TWIC card is since it's only issued by TSA. Leads me to believe the on-boarding of government employees lacks a lot of training.

Some airports had already been doing this for the past year. I couldn’t find a rhyme or reason some were doing it and some weren’t. Seemingly seemed like the same type of screening machines

Same, so I just take them off.

Do we not have the technology with these scanners nowadays to be able to detect substances in someone's shoe that isn't supposed to be there? Just let people walk through and pull them off to the side if anything questionable showed up on their scan.
