Here is what you do. Take the can you have now and walk to the wood line closest to you. Open the lid and dump it out. Throw away the can. Exercise your will to quit and don't listen to the voice that says "okay...one more can...then I'll quit."
Do the can dump for real though. It is kind of ceremonial and helps psychologically. Don't do the "I'll quit after I am done with this can" thing. Believe me man, I have been off and on dipping for 28 years. I will quit for 6 months or so and start back after taking a pinch from a friends can. Will you ever quit for ever? Probably not. It is the rare person that ever stops tobacco for all time. Most go back and forth between cycles of use and non-use. But if you want to stop, right now, for a considerable time (maybe forever) get mad, walk outside and look at that can in its face and say "frick you dip." Then scatter it's ashes all over the ground.
P.S.- just don't do it in a trash can because you will assuredly be out digging through trash to scrape up enough grains to get a dip.

This is what your face will look like after the cancer is cut out.
So my advice is to quit.
Hope that helps.

stop buying it.
get massages the first day and some other day the first week after you run out.
take a shower a couple of times a day after you run out.
drink a ton of water after you run out.
eat a lot of fruit after you run out. substitute fresh fruit for your breakfast for three days. carry apples with you.
do not eat any chicken or beef jerky. they both soak up fluids. You want to be in RELEASE MODE.
And think angry thoughts during the discomfort of withdrawal about the liars at the tobacco companies who used to claim in Congress that its not addictive.
Anger is your friend for about a week.
PUT THE MONEY YOU ARE SAVING IN AN ACCOUNT (or piggy bank, something real) AND PLAN ON SPENDING IT ON SOMETHING YOU WOULD REALLY LOVE BUT CANT QUITE SEE BUYING FOR YOURSELF. MAKE THIS INTO A POSITIVE. In a year you will have saved a lot of money. Remember what you are getting. WRITE IT DOWN.

pretty good. I would also use the company name and the family name of the people who own it though. Duke University science building was built with Marlboro money.

During med school I did a rotation at Wake Forest. There was a conspicuous absence of no-smoking signs and tobacco education posters.

I wouldn't gamble with my face.
But hey, ugly folks with little to lose tend not to be as concerned

7 days here. Had a pouch about once a day to help out but that ends today. Smokey Mtn Long cut, seeds, and hard candy are a must. Also have to just keep on keeping on and stay positive.

Like title says, I'm trying. It's tough. Any advice from someone who has quit? Right now I have the gum that im going as long as I can stand it before I pop a piece.
After 2 days of cold turkey, go and find some pics on the internet of the guys that had parts of their faces removed, jaw bone, neck etc due to dipping....that should be enough to get you over the hump. If it doesn't, you will be next.

If you dip and are reading this post, try this test. Rub your tongue back and forth in the area you typically have your dip. Do you feel a ruff area compared to the rest of your mouth? If so, this is NOT good. First stages of bad news!!!

I actually feel pretty confident I will drop this habit forever. Believe it or not, this thread is giving me some promising strategies to ease the transition to becoming tobacco free. I know the odds are against me but I'm causiously optimistic.

I dipped Skoal from 7th grade (we dipped openly at our school) until I was 23. If I was where I could dip, I did.
I was eating dinner when I watched a news segment on the Great American Smoke Out and they claimed that if you could quit for one day you can quit for good.
I had no specific plan to quit, though I generally thought I eventually would. I decided to see if I could go 10 minutes after I ate without getting a dip. I made that and then went for 30 minutes, then an hour, then until bedtime. I could not believe I made the first 10 minutes, let alone all night.
But I went to bed assuming I would get up the next day and immediately get a dip as usual. Somehow I did not, and I never touched it again. Cold turkey on the spur of the moment.
It was like after a breakup. You think about her all the time and miss her at first, then one day you realize, "I haven't thought about that bitch in forever. Don't miss her at all."

That's when I get it too. Chewed for five years and one day in September I decided to give it up. To help myself, I chewed a lot of mint flavored gum at first and after about 3 weeks or so I didn't need the gum anymore.

I took my last dip the Thursday before Labor Day 2014.
I had a heart cath that afternoon and after finding a small blockage and being told by the surgeon that dip was the source of all of my symptoms.(by causing artery spasms). I thought he was full of crap but made a deal with my wife that is quit for a month just to see.
After almost 30 years of dipping, quitting numerous other bad habits paled in comparison to getting off of dip. It was literally god awful and didn't let up after 7-10 days. Finally, about the time a month was up, it got a little easier. My symptoms didn't really go away and we started looking at issues not related to my heart. I really wanted to start back but knew that I would never suffer through stopping again no matter the consequences.
Here we are four months later and some days I could literally eat a can.
