And what was the real difference between the Hilux from 30 years ago and the Toyota Pickup/Tacoma?

Price and basic utility.
What's the price difference between similarly equipped Rangers and Hiluxes? What utility does the Hilux offer than a Ranger or Colorado doesn't?

Don't see any of that changing any time soon.
The department of transportation can suspend any of those regs.

Looks the part for small business owners.

I owned a hilux, they were pretty indestructible

Eta, I thought you were asking the difference between the hilux then and the modern tacoma/pickup
The differences are innumerable.
Not sure if you mean the build quality or the amenities. Safety, comfort, reliability have all increased.
They left behind bare bones and the tractor-ish qualities of the past. As did most manufacturers.
For the 1990s Hilux vs Tacoma (which never really competed) the Tacoma was just the Americanized Hilux that the market wanted. More road and less tractor.

That's the key right there. It is so basic and no frills. Rangers and Colorados have every bell and whistle currently required by U.S. regulations.
Like Clames already said, it fits the bill for so many small businesses, especially starting up.

No I'm talking about what was the difference back then. People in the US jizz on themselves over the thought of buying that Hilux model featured on Top Gear.
What was the difference between that model and the Toyota Pickup that was sold at the time in the US. Some mild emmisions differences?

a Toyota engine

Realized I missed what you asked after I reread it.

Everyone was moving to the Rangers and Dodges that were softer and better to daily drive.

Not a very good selling point these days.

You seen the shite that’s happening with toyota’s truck engines the past couple of years?

Look here, I've owned nearly every make of vehicle made, and I will tell you, the early Toyota engines (18R and 20R) weren't all that great. They were bad about blowing head gaskets.
It wasn't a cheap repair unless you could do it yourself. Even if you could, it was an all-day job.
The Toyota 22R engine was quite a bit better, I think that came in Toyota trucks starting around 83?
Which happened to be about the same time that new regulations were taking their toll on the quality of domestic engines.

Everyone forgets what dogs those 80s and 90s engines were in performance. Not any specific brand just deturned crap.
Any truck coming out with those specs would be shunned even at $25k.

That's the whole point of suspending those regulations for everybody.

There is zero intent (or plans) to suspend those regulations.
Toyota isn't going to start manufacturing new lower performance engines either.

Grok says the base model Suzuki’s are $6000-$9000. That’s golf cart prices.
Posted on 12/4/25 at 2:08 pm to HenryParsons
More options. Heck yes.
Posted on 12/4/25 at 2:08 pm to High C
Toyota is going to sell a shite ton of those trucks in the U.S.
