Step 1, get your mom out of fricking UAB. Dude, after the SECOND unsuccessful surgery, you go to a better place.

What were “x and y”, the meds the doc tried to prescribe?

Thing is, I had a doctor chuckle and say I needed a prescription when I asked “are there lifestyle factors” for Barrett’s.
I would 100% prescribe meds for Barrett's, but you're right, it don't take but a few seconds to mention weight loss, avoidance of alcohol, tobacco, nsaids, elevation of head of bed etc. I have handouts I give out and still encourage people to do web searches for lifestyle modifications to help their conditions. I hate that so many people have such bad experiences with doctors. This is the outcome we've warned people about for decades as corporate medicine grew and took hold, insurers became bigger and more powerful and then Obamacare delivered the kill shot.
A really good primary care doctor can save you a lot of money and pain. Finding one is becoming next to impossible though. For the things we can't handle, we have good reliable specialist that we've vetted over the years. Those are getting rarer as well.

Do doctors get kickbacks from the drug companies if the prescribe a certain amount of drugs?
That is illegal.

Not smart....blood clots are no joke and deadly...just because she was getting out of bed doesn't mean she wasn't at high risk for reasons you may not have the medical education to understand.

Ha! Doctors don't know shite and only prescribe unnecessary meds. Save the money. ChatGPT will answer all your questions and tell you how to cure yourself with lifestyle changes, herbs and meds from the feed store.

UAB must be one of those "teaching" hospitals where a half dozen junior doctors come around and ask the patient the same exact questions over and over? Its as if the new junior doctors have a check list that has to be turned in each day. I understand they have to learn, but they can learn somewhere other than where my loved ones are.
My mom recently coughed up blood and we had to admit her via the emergency room at a local hospital where the doctor did some x-rays and told us all she had a large tumor on her lung. Bam! .just like that we all set our hair on fire but a day later another doctor said it might be tuberculosis..(oh crap!)...or pneumonia. OMG, she's gonna infect their testing unit.
Three days of demanding everyone that came into the room wear protective garb, one experienced doctor came in, looked at the tests, talked with her a while and within 3 hours, she was on her way home with a handful of antibiotics to fix the pneumonia.
I'm an old dude and have never spent a night in a hospital as a patient and will resist all advice about admitting me if I am in a cognitive state..
There are doctors and then there are doctors.

Well I have a pharmacy degree and my wife is a NP. I think we have enough medical education to make a calculated decision

People are making fun, but there are literally a group of drug reps that can go around determining whether a patient needs to be involuntarily committed for saying very minor things like “im sad”.
Ive been to court where they try to commit people and you have to be legit crazy/dangerous to get committed. Doctors and family members pleading with judge for commitment to help the person
Its not that easy to get committed

You were better off requesting a psychologist/therapist. Psychiatry is a quack field and shouldn’t even be included as a specialty in medical schools.

quote:You could have asked this like a mature adult instead of rudely. It sounds as if there was a concern for either a future mood issue or another episode of delirium. You could have refused politely and nothing would have been prescribed. There are those patients who after visiting with a consultant would be upset that nothing was prescribed, especially if a few days or weeks later a mood disorder became an issue. It really wouldn't be a surprise given the difficult times your mom has unfortunately been experiencing.
I asked, in an unpolite manner, if there was in case in which they would not have prescribed my mother psychotropic drugs

Mental health problems like anxiety and depression don’t get fixed by a medication. They stay with you for the rest of your life. You have to learn how to manage them which is exactly why psychologists are the best way to deal with them.
You ever seen that movie called The Babadook? It’s basically a metaphor for how mental health problems never leave you. The only way to “treat” mental health problems is to accept them and learn to live with them.
I want to differentiate though that “mental illness” and “mental health problems” are two distinct categories. The former absolutely requires medications in order to function.
