Takata just can't catch a break.

quote:

The blast destroyed the home. The sheriff’s office sent out search parties for Ms. Robles, thinking she may have been carried by the force of the explosion into nearby brush. Investigators called off the search after two days when they discovered Ms. Robles’s bones, teeth and other remains in the smoldering debris of her house, said Tom Schmerber, the local sheriff for the county of Maverick. Also injured were the two drivers of the truck, who fled their vehicle after it swerved off the road and crashed, and two passers-by in a car.

I forgot what they use now...first generation airbags used Sodium Azide...which was nasty stuff. In the story, they say it is Ammonium Nitrate...I thought that was just a reporter not doing his due diligence...till I looked it up. In'01, Takata switched to freakin Ammonium Nitrate...no wonder they are throwing shrapnel all over cars. I thought they would have switched to a different non-metallic oxide that would be more stable (tetrazols..triazols, etc.)

I got popped by an airbag circa 2008 and it fricked me up.

Some type of chemical burn on my chin and an awesome black eye. I looked like a domestic violence victim.

But that was better than dying so I wasn't mad

ETA:

Both side curtain and front bags. My passenger was saved by a side curtain as well.

If I'm not mistaken, the first airbag was designed by a man that first designed hand grenades.

ETA: torpedoes.

Hetrick was an industrial engineer and member of the United States Navy. His airbag was designed based on his experiences with compressed air from torpedoes during his service in the Navy,

One of my coworkers was in a parking lot with her car (02 Accord) idling in the stall. She's sitting there reading a text message when her driver's side airbag deployed.

Poor lady came back in visibly shaken and almost completely deaf from the explosion.

And GD Honda told her that even though her airbags had a recall on them for premature deployments they wouldn't cover the repairs. They told her the vehicle had been in an accident TEN YEARS earlier which voided the free replacement. The airbags didn't even deploy in that accident but they did not care.

No one has ever hit me nearly as hard as an airbag drover my right hand into my collarbone.

I've been punched in the face by some BIG ol' boys, nothing came close to that airbag hit.
