An estimated crowd of about 7,000 people attended the Big W Trail Ride in Grand Cane Saturday. Only a fraction of those could crowd onto the Whitaker family’s 20-acre site so that meant thousand spilled along Blunt Mill Road and spread out 2 miles away in the residential areas of the small village.

One person was shot, and a man who reportedly pointed a gun at deputies was arrested.

quote:

The sheriff’s office received reports of people parking in yards, in private driveways and on the school’s ballfields. Callers reported people were defecating and peeing in their yards, leaving trash, rummaging through vehicles and even going onto private property to fish on a pond.

The promoters cared about one thing: selling a ton of admissions. Instead of planning and figuring out an appropriate capacity for the 20 acre tract, they invited everyone they could and had a turnout way above the capacity of the "venue."

The Sheriff towed away a bunch of cars from Grand Cane.

I appreciate that the writer put the emphasis on this most offensive violation vs the others.

Desoto Parish trail rides used to be attended by the trail riding club members and guests. Then, someone figured out you could make good money (especially if you aren't spending money on porta-potties, water, security, etc.

Someone said that the admission price was initially $10 but that it also increased to $25-$35 as more people showed up.

They trashed Grand Cane. There was litter everywhere, including the infamous "purple towels" that were used for attendees to piss and shite.

The other Parishes around Shreveport set up regulations to prevent this, so the "trail rides" (which have only a few horseback riders) have migrated to Desoto Parish. There is one Saturday in Frierson, La. for Juneteenth.

The Frierson local govt would be better off burning themselves alive than trying to stop this.
