My buddy got his oil changed in a 2012 Tundra with 38k miles at the local Toyota Dealer.

Later that day, engine knocks, he pulls over, leaking oil...filter not tight. Toyota dealer picks it up on flat bed, changes filert, no sign of engine knocking. They tell him it's good to go.

Offer to extend powertrain warranty to 150k from 100k after he raises hell. He says no dice and wants them to replace engine or give him fair market value for the truck.

Should he push it or take the warranty? The warranty seems good, but there is always gray area and deductibles, etc. down the line. I'd be worried something wouldn't be covered.

If the engine is no longer knocking then what's the issue? Did it run completely out of oil and seize up?

Replace the engine over a loose filter?

I'm no mechanic, but a friend who is a mechanic said he would be worried about some other components. Not sure, I told him I'd probably take the 150k..

He drove it a few days...it wasn't "loose" all the oil had left the engine. It was close to seizing up.

Maybe it's a not a big deal, good to know...

Used to love when guys would get all pissy and start demanding stuff like this. The issue was fixed. They offered him more warranty and he should have took it. He's not getting a new engine or $$ and probably gonna piss away his chance at more warranty because he's trying to be "that guy".

if it caused any other damage he will know within the next 112,000 miles.. and if nothing is wrong with it and hes not comfortable driving it tell him to trade it in and he should get "fair market value".. BTW your friend sounds like a jerk

Thanks for advice, I'll pass it on.

That's basically what I told him.

He's really not, just paranoid.

Unless he gets a lawyer, that's all they're gonna do.

Took my truck in for an oil change, engine locked up on the rack. Ford put a new engine in it and extended the engine warranty until 8/2018 or 150K. I have 65K on it now. It will only have 75K on it when I sell it next year so someone will get a full 12-18 months of warranty on a truck with a 15K motor.

Had a buddy with an eerily similar issue. Be prepared to fight tooth and nail for months before getting what you want.

Tell your friend to trade in for new Tundra with me, Ill have the 100k mile warranty included in deal, and new motor. GL to him anyways, his Toyota will last forever, he should settle down and be grateful they are not pulling a Ford lol

just needs to tell them to do a compression test. if engine tests out.....it's all good.

no need to change the engine. in fact......I'd strongly recommend not changing it. it seems that......now a days when changing an engine, the damn thing is never right. all kinds of issues pop up.
