Option 1 - pays more and you’re an independent contractor so you can cheat on your taxes

Option 2 everyday all day for me. I have a 30 min drive if there’s no traffic, and if there’s any traffic at all it jumps to 45min to an hour. I’d love a 15 min commute. Plus vacay and sick time, I’ve never had that in my entire Career, have always worked contract or self employed. I’d kill to have a set salary and benefits closer to home. Especially if there is room to move up.

Option 2.
I always assume my benefits cost the company the same as my pay. So my burden is 2x salary.
Insurance, 401k, pension, time off, etc all have value.

Option 1 is around 195 hours more a year depending on traffic, plus extra fuel costs and wear on vehicle, plus the additional hours that are not paid holidays and PTO. Your personal time away from work should be valued higher than your hourly at work, so it will not be a direct comparison based on your hourly. Factor in that you will not get paid for days you are sick, have emergencies, etc., the the risk of the contract itself, additional taxes, and I would bet it is not 30,000 more a year even with the per diem.
In the future the salary position probably has some career advancement path, retirement, and COL raises to name a few.
Long term the salary position is the better option. Short term probably the contract.
You have a family, you need to be thinking stability and long term, not Baw term.

quote:
50/50 split between office and field work.
you’ll learn 10x more in the field depending on your experience level.
also you’ll be outside occasionally and at a minimum on your own time in your truck back and forth
if you aren’t in charge 100% office work can be miserable

Jody is hoping you take number 1

If you can swing option 2 financially, why wouldn’t you do it?

Kids need your presence over presents, baw.

How does a contract work involve working in an office? Consultant? How do you not have vacation days or Holidays, as in contract work they can’t technically tell you when to work or it’s against IRS rules.
But yeah, as said unless you are making well under $75k then benefits and vacation pay is going to eat up the vast majority of the $30k difference, not to mention the location and drive difference.

Option 2 "sounds" more solid. If you're working with good people that do their jobs and don't flake I'd rather that.
Zipping home after work is way better. I've done both. Stopngo traffic for an hour can become soul draining, imo.

Update : took option 2.
Was a plant baw for too long.... in inspections and maintenance, not production.
Contract position would have been through a headhunting company with option to go direct after 6 months.

I took option 2 25years ago. Best decision of my life. Don't know enough about yours to advise with any credibility.
