My father has a 2003 Toyota 4runner with 180k miles. He got hit from behind which caused some mostly cosmetic damage. There are a couple of things that need to be fixed. I am wondering if this car is worth buying back and driving myself. What do you think?

Since we all have a detailed knowledge of the cars history after that amazing rundown you gave, I’d say go for it!

Have you contacted your insurance carrier to confirm they would insure you to drive this vehicle?

You might end up spending more than you want to.

It’s A’s car. If party B hit A, party B (or his insurer) owes A for the damage. It is still A’s car. Party B’s insurers will want to get the car off the road if possible but A doesn’t have to agree to that.

I have kept a “damaged” car. I wish someone would “damage” it again.

depends really on the economics of the whole thing. gotta know how much they will sell the car for, how much it will cost to get it repaired to the extent that you are happy with it, and how long you want to keep it.

nostalgia or emotional connection to the car should really play no part in the decision.

Depends on how much it cost to fix it.
If it cost more than it's worth no.
If you want a beater to drive and it's safe to do so, then yes.

The key here is it is a 2003. Toyota changed the style / body of 4 Runners in 2002. The '03s are too short. The 2002's are will be / are classics. '03, not so much.

No.

Usually you can get liability coverage but not comp / collision on a vehicle that would have a salvage title

Time is the enemy on cars.

If chasing leaks and spending more than the vehicle is worth is your thing then go for it.

Now, as a backup vehicle or project car, if you have the time, sure. Even better if you have the ability to DIY repairs.
