144 in my new '91 Cougar XR7 special edition, and still had pedal left. People in backseat were frozen.

Not the fastest, but about 120 on a residential street in Metairie. V8, nitrous, and high school arent a good combination.

About a month ago, I rode in a new NSX that hit about 120 before merging onto the interstate. Very cool and extremely fast car, but everything is so quite and smooth it’s almost too refined.

Gotcha. Some of these top speeds don’t make sense to me but I’m not an engineer or racing enthusiast.

The road quality and weather conditions have to be perfect for me to try to hit high speeds like that. It helps that my car is relatively heavy and long so it has good stability at high speeds.

Yes I agree. Some of them definitely seem inflated. I can tell you that even at 120 or 130 miles an hour if you're driving a vehicle that's a little sketchy at that speed you don't really have time to stare down the speedometer to figure out exactly how fast you're going

This is an underrated factor I think many aren't appreciating. Not only are many speedometers inaccurate, it's also not linear So the faster you go the bigger the read error.

The only way to know for sure is using a formula with RPMs, gear ratio and tire circumference.

Correct.

You could also use time and distance traveled but of course that also relies on odometers which can be as inaccurate as speedometer, unless of course you're using a GPS which is much more accurate.

Also many people don't use factory size wheel diameters that those odometers and speedometers are calibrated for and they never even factor that in. I put 35s on my Land Rover which isn't that far off from Factory and I had to use a scan gauge to correct my speedometer by I think 2%
