have that in my house, didn't like it at first but it kind of grew on me, very durable, I guess the biggest thing is making sure you get a good moisture barrier down

I have 3/4" thick nail down white oak floors in my house. I have had them for 2 years now and even though I have kids and a dog...no real damage can be seen. White oak is pretty hard and it has been very stable for me as well with little movement during the season changes.

White oak is decently tough but you will still have issues over time. Don't do pine. It is far too soft for the action you described. Also no heels wheels and don't drag anything or it will dent and ding. Most of the time when I see oak though it is nailed not glued. Glue downs are typically pines and other woods. May just be my experience though.

Go with the Cali Bamboo at Lowe's. Very hard, durable and great styles.

All hardwood floors are going to get scratched and dinged up from kids and pets. It's just a matter time and how much damage are you're ok with looking at.
My little sister just bought a house that was remodeled with ceramic tile floors that look like wood. It's awesome.

Hardwood floors are fine on a slab in Baton Rouge. You need to do a calcium chloride test to make sure you don't have a moisture issue in your slab. Engineered wood floors are the way to go. Don't do bamboo it isn't all it is cracked up to be. I would check some local floor stores over Lowes. Don't skimp on the most abused surface in your house. It will cost you way more in the long run. ANY FLOOR WILL SCRATCH!

Agree engineered is the way to go unless new construction. Check out Hickory.

Hickory is definitely better than oak. OP stated he wanted oak. You will find more options in hickory.

Put some anti/bacterial padding under it. And kill the dogs if they piss inside.
