Are you saying that architecture cannot include non-building structures?

No, I even said that in my last post, but when asked about architecture the last things on my mind are bridges, walls, and non-building structures.

So, you're being slightly pedantic, which is fine, but may be a waste on the OT.

However, I'd take issue with you great wall and Stonehenge examples. I believe they would fall under the term "architecture".

Clean, fresh water is a basic need of human beings.

No structures in the history of this planet have served their purpose better or longer than the Roman aqueducts.

It wasn't until midway through the 20th century that city of Rome surpassed the amount of water brought into the city by the Roman Empire.

More water, in fact, than brought in even today by the modern city of Bangalore. A city of 6 million.

They are the most remarkable and useful structures of any type ever constructed by human beings.

OK, but all of that is kind of a non-sequitur.

Really? Structures built by a non-industrial civilization that are still superior today in some cases?

That stayed useful long after the civilization that built them collapsed?

That's not a, unsurpassed feat of architecture?

Not if they're not classified as being examples of architecture.

Well it's not as if they were ugly. But they were built to serve a purpose. Supply water. Hundreds were built, and the whole network was constructed using animals, humans, rope, etc.

No machinery of any kind. One of the materials used in their construction, Roman concrete, was superior to anything modern humans could make. It was only recently that mankind relearned how to make it.

Won't beat a dead horse any longer. If we're speaking strictly of looks, than the aqueducts can't compete with structures built more for the looks than needs.

Perhaps the aqueducts belong more in a discussion of engineering marvels instead.

That was the point.

I didn't believe the only kind of mastery was beauty in regards to architecture. I still don't.

The Hoover Dam was featured on many of the top architectural publications of the day at the time of it's completion.

I saw it in person in 2005. The immediate response is inevitably...what the f***.
