re: To what extent are you worried about AI/AGI creating really serious job market shock?

taught myself a programming code called Python a few years back to use for various functions. Took me a couple months to get fully up to speed with it and python developers can make decent money. Today I could simply pull up a programming AI, type in what I want the code to do and it will spit out a fully functioning code block written in python with zero knowledge of the coding language.
Companies are using AI to generate 20-30% of administrative tasks which includes entry level coding. And the AI is only going to get better at it

It’s going to be a while before robots are driving to people’s homes, walking in, doing an assessment of the problems , then going get their tools and fixing the problem at a large scale.
This is infinitely easier than factoring in the grey area and psychology of something like law or tax. We already do almost all of these things with robotics, just not at the same time yet

I agree and I think the use cases may differ from how humans do the work. My bot calls the plumbing company’s bot, defines the work, sets up an appointment and then determines if it’s a human task, robot task or human with Robot assist. Ai is about continuous learning of the data models. ChatGPT is showing us that it’s learning fast

In about 10 years you may be correct. But the older folks who are still around want and need personal interaction and a$$ kissers. The younger folks on the way up are more independent and can do the work themselves now and in the future, via AI.

I think we eventually get to a place where humanoid robots do all of the strenuous manual labor while AI systems do all of the tedious white labor tasks.
This would require humans to receive some type of universal income which would lead to total control of us by the government.

The thought of billions of humans with nothing but time on their hands scares me

AI is and will have a serious impact on certain types of jobs. We have a friends son who is a very good coder, and now their whole department is being eliminated because of AI.

Doesn't concern me for me because I'm close to retirement.
For young people, it's a real worry.

Luckily, I’ll be long retired or dead by that point. But I fear for our children and grand children yet to be born.

Plumbing robot
Whats gonna happen when a servo inevitably goes out midway through a task

You send out one of your greatly reduced humans. Any other brain busters?

Then what's the point in investing millions in a robot?

It works faster and more efficiently. Any other brain busters?

Are we also going to have HVAC robots that are going to be able to go into attics and crawlspaces? What about electrician robots that will be able to wire a house with multiple variables?
I remember when I started with BNSF as a conductor in 2017 and was told that my job was gonna be replaced by robots in 5 years and truck drivers were also going to be out of work in 5 years.
Still waiting. A lot of this AI shite seems like a money pit for venture capitalists and its bubble will pop soon.

You've never done plumbing so you have no clue what you're talking about. You just hate people who work in trades.

Almost certainly

That was bullshite, but look where we’re at. We’re piloting exactly those programs, driverless trucks are actually happening right now. There’s already commercial driverless passenger options.

It’s like any other technology, there’s definitely going to be winners and losers

I love people that work in the trades, I have zero interest in getting in my attic in August.
I’m just not a retard that thinks being an hvac tech is better than being an engineer

I don’t see how it doesn’t get really ugly with a lot of push back in certain areas. Especially places with a real history of labor activism like say France.

I think a lot of folks exaggerate the speed in which it will happen. AI phone systems struggle to even take human phone calls correctly, we're probably at least two decades away from AI/robotics really starting to take over.
Posted on 6/22/25 at 1:04 pm to Violent Hip Swivel
By the time AI takes my job, a good portion of other people would have lost theirs that the situation should be stabilized.
