I give a few bucks in the tip jar to places that I am a regular at. The go-to pizza takeout, chinese etc. After I started doing that wouldn't you know it, my curry chicken started having more chicken and less veggies, my pizza slices somehow became 10 percent bigger and sometimes a can of coke was in the bag "by mistake". You rub my back I'll rub yours.
The Chinese delivery guys are so surprised (apparently they are often not tipped, I dunno why) that they now, if I have not already done so, will also bring in my daily newspapers from the curb (yes I still get three a day) and my mail from the mailbox! I am not too lazy to do it but if order an earlier lunch I may have not been outside yet to snag the stuff.

If you tip a bartender for serving you a drink then you should tip the barista for preparing your coffee or staff for preparing/packaging your food. Just be consistent.

Notice how alcoholism is always exempt from criticism? Gas is over $3/gallon? Time to rage. A mich ultra is $4? They don't stop ordering them and tip for a bottle top to be removed

Why are you going places that hires people like that?

I always tip when I go to the counter and pick up food.

Price elasticity is a thing, sure. So is paying your workers. If your business model collapses without 18% tips for handing over a muffin, the business model is the problem.

I noticed this at Chris's specialty meats the other day. I grab what I want to buy, put it on the counter and the card reader asks if I want to tip. Then there is a tip jar.
This tipping thing is completely out of control!!

Then vote with your wallet and not go there. I understand what you are saying and in some ways agree. If you walk up to my place and make a take out order the only real difference is the amount of time spent and a refill or two which is why I think some tip is warranted

Depends on the nature of the restaurant. If it is fast food, it is overpriced anyway so I don’t leave a tip. I mostly eat sandwiches, etc. and Ii typically add a dollar….i won’t miss a dollar and it really helps those folks out.
