John Oliver did a show on newspapers going to the Internet 2 weeks ago. They've slashed staff and are basically going for click bait content. Looks like the TP is right there with that business model.
I was about to post the exact same thing.

To Our Readers, An editorial cartoon that appeared on the Opinions page of Monday’s newsstand edition of The Times-Picayune, and circulated widely on social media Monday and Tuesday, was in poor judgment. The illustration, by Mike Luckovich of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was a commentary on a Department of Justice report that found systemic racism in the Baltimore Police Department, and is a powerful expression of the outrage that many feel about the issues raised in that report. However, the police officer's uniform depicted in the cartoon was generic, effectively skewering all law enforcement, including those in our own community. The timing of publication – after a weekend in which police participated in search and rescue operations across south Louisiana – was coincidental, but completely inappropriate. The cartoon should not have run. We apologize to readers offended by our lapse, and especially to the Louisiana Flood of 2016 first responders whose tireless efforts and heroism have inspired so many. Mark Lorando, Editor

"We apologize to readers offended by our lapse." bullshite. This was part of the plan. Stir up the pot then give out a half arse apology.
