What he did was before a live audience. You can usually tell when he goes off script because his co-stars give it away.

The elephant story and the dentist are classics. His ad libbing was always great and he never failed to make every other actor break during a skit.

Carol Burnett's expression the instant he says "dwarf trainer" is all you need to know. Conway's gone off reservation and the rest of them are just along for the ride. His sense of comedic timing is impeccable in that skit. Every time he finishes a part of the story, he waits until right before Burnett is about to get back on script to drop the next grenade on them. It's pure brilliance.
