That's sickening. I can't imagine the sorrow those families feel right now.

I obviously feel for families.
But, everyone should teach kids to ...

1) respect water
2) how to swim

Kids were 5,8, and 9.
The 8 and 9 year olds should have been able to swim at the minimum. Which I can almost guarantee they couldn't.
With free swimming at YMCA etc there's zero excuse.

Guarantee you a lawyer has already contacted the family to sue the owner of the private pond. And
Some family member will agree to the suit. That should be as disturbing as the death of the children.

Never ever ever will I understand kids not knowing basics.
My son is 8. He had a friend over yesterday and we swam. Friend tells me he doesn't know how. In 5 minutes, I had him grasp the concept of kicking the legs to move forward and float.
30 minutes later you would have thought he had known for a long time.

Such a tragedy that in the south, some families just don't get to be around water enough to avoid this stuff

A news report from that area said the mother was at work and the children were being cared for by a friend. So very sad - and preventable.

The area is just a string of small towns (<5k is the biggest) with no Y I can assure you. Sounds like kids just running around the woods and such and playing at a pond. Terribly sad result.

Then the friend has some serious explaining to do to the authorities.

Yep.

I have a 7 yr.old daughter and for the past 2 summers she has taken swim lessons. They have paid off immensely.

My grandparents nor my mother knew how to swim. My grandpa's family were dirt poor sharecroppers from Iuka, Ms and even though living in the shadows of the Tennessee River, none of them got in any thing deeper than a #3 Tub. My Grandpas sister was married to a WW2 vet who was stationed in the South Pacific and she learned from being married to him. She is the one who taught me around the age of 5 or 6.

I taught my kid to not try to save another kid from drowning, but to run for help. I can imagine one trying to save the other, getting overwhelmed and the third trying to save the others. It must have been a horrible thing to go through.
