While the demographics of residents and crime levels are different, the way Manhattan became safe again was pricing out the "riff raff" and beautifying/rebuilding delapidated city blocks (and heavy policing).

Yeah, I've been thinking/hoping that pricing out the scum would work, but it hasn't so far. Real estate prices are unreal in Nola, but I assume that the housing projects and more importantly the section 8 clusters still allows these types the chance to live in the city.

And I feel bad for the regular hard working low income types because this is a huge strain on them to still be able to live near downtown and find cheap housing that allows them to be near timely/efficient public transportation.

I think this has to go by neighborhood.

New Orleans is set up like a checkerboard with good and bad neighborhoods, so the scum mingle with the high price real estate folks.

Just takes a lot of time and relocating section 8 zoning. Section 8 will fricking doom the city I think if they don't rethink that strategy.

ETA:

It's also not just pricing them out, but also dramatically adding street lighting, repairing abandoned buildings (or bulldozing them), etc. It is certainly not a silver bullet, but it does help.

It doesn't help that the New Orleans police are understaffed and full of morons. They are certainly no NYPD.

And add to that the ability to have some good mental health/substance abuse programs would be a big help.

I think Nola is very close to hitting the major turning point on everything upriver from the 9th ward.
There has been a ton of gentrification and it's not slowing down. Central city can hopefully keep changing as that is the worst neighborhood that is really close to downtown

there was a mental health facility proposed not far from where this building will be built. Also both bridgehouse and Ozman Inn is within blocks

Are you blind to all of the construction going on in basically every corner of the city? People love to focus on this one issue with Mitch and turn a blind eye to all of the other great successes going on in the city right now.

There is tons of construction, but I am getting a bit worried that the prolonged oil downturn is going to just cause half-finished buildings and empty office space. Hopefully if we build it, they will come in terms of other industries.

Broken frickin Windows Theory. It's been proven to work and the city needs to get on board.

the 3rd tallest building in the state of louisiana, long considered a landmark in New Orleans due to its extremely recognizable design, is rotting in the middle of the city's business district.

fix it or demolish it. the other construction is obviously great but i don't see Houston or Atlanta or even cities like Memphis having abandoned, condemned skyscrapers downtown.

It's owned by a local developer. I think they're trying to figure out how to get rid of 45 floors of toxic mold and asbestos.

It's a matter of individual preference, but those designs could be in any metropolitan city.

These are all over Denver. Might be cooler if there wasnt an almost identical one on every single block.

i'm aware. but i thought they already gutted the building awhile back. i could be wrong about that but i was under the impression that it's basically just a shell at this point.

and whether it's owned by a developer or not, the city needs to put some pressure on some people. it isn't like we're talking about the Schwegmann's/Robert's that have been empty in Bywater and the LGD.

it's a fricking skyscraper right next to the interstate.

From what I've heard, it is an asbestos nightmare that can't be demolished because they don't want that all over downtown and no one wants to buy it because of the extreme costs that go with restoring it.

Either way, the monuments have nothing to do with it and is a childish, straw man argument.

Not too sure. I agree that it's a major eye sore. My guess is that with all of the new development in that area it will become worth it for someone to buy it and fix it in the future.

This building has been re-mediated completely so no Mold or Asbestos to contend with. What you do have to contend with though is the layout of the floors with the cement columns every 10 feet and you will have to design a very expensive plumbing system on each floor. It will be developed but probably not for another three or four years.

Had no idea this project was out there for the old Trade Center building.

Every time I walk by there I think "what a waste of prime real estate".

Hope it moves along.
