the CG cannot charge you for a rescue. It is a military service that gets its funding through taxes you pay

If you break down and call the coast guard to tow you in they can send you a bill. I’ve seen it happen

Eta they may not charge anymore but at one time they did

No doubt. First picture up was a Bell. These seem more authentic, and it’s definitely an AW.

The photos also reveal possibly something else. The lack of emergency flotation system. The forward pods are located just under the crew doors and they don't seem to be there.
More discussion on the pprune website.

As with all discussion forums, don't take everything posted there as gospel. There are some things mentioned that aren't quite correct.

I wonder if a single window of the helicopter was jettisoned, or if the passengers even knew that was possible.

I think anyone flying over water in a helicopter should have to take a HUET or BOSIET-type class. There’s a good chance that at least some of them could have survived with emergency egress training, especially if the pilot was able to auto-rotate on the way down.

I'd assume they had zero training. Gonna have to wait to see what happened to the pilots, or where they ended up.

I said it earlier in the thread, but the slowest part of the whole thing for me was getting the 4 point harness buckled and tightened. There's no way you can hurry up and do that properly.

After taking both of those classes, I made the decision that my window is getting knocked out as soon as I know we're going down. frick waiting, I'm trying to not drown

That window might protect you from a wall of water or debris. It’s prob better to follow the training from HUET.

Sad. Must've been a relatively serious medical emergency to depart at 2am. T&P for all the families involved.

Based on the pictures on that other message board I don't think all the training in the world would have saved them.

Looked clear to me that they hit down at a high rate of speed, and I’m willing to speculate pilot error

Just lost his bearing, but the die was cast taking off on that flight to begin with under those circumstances.

What kind of medical emergency necessitates taking off at 2 am with the whole party?

Cline’s daughter was ill. She was there with three friends. Cline wasn’t going to send the daughter alone, and he wasn’t going to leave three twenty- somethings that he barely knew at his mansion.

A mansion has a full staff when your luxury liner has a heli and a sub

I’m really not trying to be argumentative, but a heli flight like that is maybe routine for military or Coast Guard, but highly risky under those circumstances, or am I just not very educated on the routine middle of the night over open ocean commutes taking place?
