My last two were from the shelter. Went in looking for a quiet, playful pup. My dogs literally couldn’t be better. Loving, playful, never uses bathroom in house

I've always gone to CAA and looked for the one that looked scared/timid/calm, was quiet (non barking) when all the others around them were loud and aggressive sounding, and the one that wagged its tail when he/she saw you and I'm 3/3 picking out tremendous pets. Go to your local pound. Some "rescue shelters" and their owners have breeder type personalities that hand pick the cutest ones at the pound and then sell them for profit at way more of a price than the pound would've charged you. If they really cared about these dogs, they'd save the bigger pit mixes in the back that are the ones in actual danger of euthanasia

We get our kids and dogs from rescue operations. All are mixed breed mutts, and they are the best. Very loving, and they seldom bite.

This is bullshite. My rescue was a stray that hung around my house. Pit and Boxer mix. She's the best fricking dog I've ever had and I have a Bichon and a Aussie/Pix mix from her. Stop with this nonsense

Got a boxer from the shelter in Baton Rouge and had him for 10 years now. He is a great dog.

I'm sure it's been said, but let the dog pick you. Shelter dogs are AMAZING if you can find the right one for you and your lifestyle. When you know they are the right one, you know. If you have dogs already, make sure to get them acquainted with the potential rescue before you adopt, just so you aren't put in a shitty situation and they don't get along.

I've had 2 shelter dogs in my life, and they were the most grateful, loving, caring, and affectionate dogs I've ever been around. Both mutts, both females around 4 years old, but in many cases that means they will live a longer, healthier life than purebred dogs for the most part. And they will absolutely adore you for rescuing them.

Puppies are in shelters, too. All over rural Louisiana bc stupid people tend to not fix their pets. Also, CAA in Baton a Rouge gets them all the time, too. Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter is super high kill bc of space, always has pups. Caddo Parish. Lafayette also has a shelter, but I don’t know much about them. Acadiana Animal Aid is a 501c3 rescue who pulls from there a alot. Dante’s Hope is in Baton Rouge, a rescue. Take Paws is in NOLA, always has puppies. Both have Fb pages.

OP, go to shelter pages and click on adoptions. It will lead you to their availables. And probably not even all of them. Many lead to their Pet Finder link where you can narrow your selection.

Join pet pages, pups are always on Lafayette Rehoming site. There’s a stunning shepherd on there now.

I adopted a rescue last July after my dog passed away. She's the best girl ever. I am her third home. I have no idea why anyone abandoned/dumped her. She's so happy all the time—just a sweetheart. She healed my heart, and I healed hers.

For one of mine, I contacted the shelter and said I wanted to adopt their most at risk dog who was dog friendly, bring her out to me bc I’m not walking through the shelter, and out comes this golden brindle pit bull. She’s been with me 5 years and is the best dog, and my dog tester for fosters. Loves all people.

2nd was a pocket pittie who was scared and shutting down in same shelter, same summer. Took her home. She’s happy and healthy and loves to play with the pack. Still scared of new things, might have a touch of doggie autism. Another dog tester.

My 3rd I had transported to me from Harris County, TX kill list 3 years ago bc her pups had been adopted. She looked like a matronly Dutchie. She isn’t lol. Maybe some cur and or mal, who knows. Her dna test seemed to pick up every other breed/mix I have. Whatever is in there gives her energy mixed with spaz. She’s amazing, too. And will reach up and hug everyone, even strangers. Then drop and roll onto the ground in submission. A beautiful silver brindle. Will run dna again another time.

The only one I “chose” and adopted as a tiny pup is my Pyrenees shepherd mix. He is gentle as a marshmallow. Unless you are a stranger. He is not a dog tester not a people meeter. I am safe in my home with him. He also protects me against flying birds and butterfly farts.

Rescue dogs can be wonderful companions. It would be a good idea to make the adoption contingent on a clean bill of health from your vet.

My 14 yr old mutt from shelter is laying next to me right now. Healthy and happy . He’s the best boy.

I owned four German Shepherds prior to adopting him. Not one of the Shepherds made it past 6yrs. Two had cancer. One was paralyzed with degenerative spine, the worst was the one with anal fistula. I will never purchase a pure bred again. Ever. Plus my vet offered free care for the first year to anyone adopting from a shelter. It was a huge bonus.
