I remember the night my ex OD (we were still married at that time). My son's were 4 and 1 at the time. All I could do on the way to the hospital was pray that she wouldn't die. Idk how I would've been able to tell my 4 year old that he wouldn't ever see his mom again.
Addiction is a very selfish thing. Somewhere along the lines before it gets out of hand, that person is making the choice of drugs over their loved ones. And the worst part about it is, the addict can move on with their life easier than the one who never touched the stuff. The person that loves them is left with doubt about themselves, asking over and over "why couldn't I make them happy? What was so awful that they felt the need to turn to drugs or alcohol?"
And to this day, I still haven't told my sons about why their mom and I split up. She gets to tell them that I just threw her out on the street for no reason. Maybe one day I will tell them, but right now I just don't think they're old enough to understand.

Very good story, bro. I was married to an addict - alcohol and adderall, for 6 years with 2 small kids. She never OD'd but it got to the point where I divorced her over it.

This is what I'm dealing with right now. Sucks that they won't know the truth, and she gets to paint whatever picture she wants. Truth be told she really couldn't give 2 shits about the kids when she was using, but now she tries to act like mom of the year. Still taking me some time to adjust to this.

Addicts are stupid as frick. They go to rehab and they make friends with former addicts. They date and marry former addicts like themselves. Then one person falls off the wagon and starts using again and all of their friends start using again with them. What they should do is only associate with people who have never used drugs and arent at risk to start using them on urges. Those people are much more likely to stop the addict from using again
This is true. The only way I was able to get off the shite was to leave the state for a year and when I returned I didn't go back to the city I was born and raised. I moved into a rural area where I don't know anyone. You have to leave the entire lifestyle behind including anyone you know even remotely associated with it or you will inevitably fall off.
I also want to agree with the person who said 3 years clean, then you can start saying you kicked it. 6 months to a year is not long enough. 3 years might not even be tbh.

The only thing you can do is be the best dad possible and always be there for them. Do not bash the mom in front of them. Just be a rock for them.
It is going to hurt and you are going to want to stoop to her level, but don't.
Once they are around 11-14 they will see it and get it and know who has their back.

I know what you mean. I raised my boys by myself for 3 years. Now that she's sober and back in the picture, she thinks that they cannot live without her and I am not a good father. I know it's bullshite, but it still hurts.

I just watched the video:
wow..that is tough. I have 3 sons. The part the made me tear up the most was the fake vampire teeth.
I know what my kids were like when they played with those teeth, so young and innocent.
I am not sure about him posting the video but if it saves one life it was worth it.
