Is it cool to take karate now?

Sure. The same way a lot of other things from the 90's are now cool. Like JNCO jeans and nano pets

Gracie United used to be Gracie barra. I forget the reason why Professor switched

After training under a Pedro Sauer affiliate, though, I don't see how people advance well in other BJJ systems.

It is basically just like the gracie system? There are a couple of other BJJ systems that are great in their own right. 10th planet is based more on no-gi and I think it is much more applicable in MMA situations as opposed to traditional gi teachings. I trained under Felipe Neto when I lived near him. He was a student of Romero "Jacare" Cavalcanti who learned from Rolls. So pretty much every system is going to stem Mitsuyo > Carlos > Helio.

Gracie United didn't seem to have a set curriculum--like all of the other BJJ schools I've trained at except the Pedro Saucer affiliate. The Pedro Sauer affiliate was the only one I felt a beginner could just jump into and make serious headway. It's the only school where I had any kind of idea of what I should be learning and how I should be progressing instead of just chaining together random, crazy moves every class without rhyme or reason.

This school is in industrialplex. He is legit.

BJJ is a great art to learn. I learned boxing, tang soo do and judo before I heard of it. It will make you effective at protecting yourself l. You should also get boxing or kickboxing training also. At least some training.

I understand where you are coming from in that respect. However, I will point out it has a lot more to do with the teacher. I would argue that your Sauer instructors were probably better. The more comfortable the teacher is with bjj, the more likely they are to help others "put it all together".

Not exactly. More like Carlos=Helio.

Honestly, I guess it kinda depends on which side of the family tree you decided to begin the jits journey on as a White Belt. We are under Royler which means we are under Helio, which means I can walk into any school that has Grand Master Helio on the wall and roll there.

Pretty much the entire line of Black Belts under our umbrella of Gracie Humaita schools are all pretty firm believers that jits is first and foremost a self defense martial art. We drill real world street applications that doesn't just focus on ground stuff. Gracie Barra, on the other hand, tends to be more sport focused.

Not at the Y, at a good school.

I currently help instruct BJJ in Alabama under the Gracie United banner. There are plenty of LA gyms you could join. You definitely won't regret it.

And both UFC gyms on Sherwood and Acadian have BJJ programs.

Only place on town with black belts. Rico was there. Gabe is a good dude. Not really any other place to train.

JM Modern Jiu-Jitsu has 3 BJJ black belts who train daily. They also have a Judo coach who competes internationally. I highly recommend it.

Where is this? I have an office in Geismar that I travel to about once a month for a few days. I wonder if they allow drop ins? I have rolled at the UFC gym by LSU a few times.
