I assume that eventually we will move to age of consent now based on "nature".

If nature allows you create a child, then you are ready to create a child.... it's your body....no "conservative oppression" telling you to "wait until we are comfortable with the idea of you having sex with your body"

So it'll it will be like circumcision, a bar mitzvah/bah mitzvah age of consent, type movement in the next 5-20 years

And, yet, people will present the founding fathers as modern statesmen.

20 years old you’re getting into college and exploring new things. I’m not exactly sure what interests you would have hanging out with a 16 year old unless you’re just a complete weirdo.

They are? Modern “statesmen” are anything but. Corrupt political royalty who should all be out on their asses.

But the founding fathers had some ideas and principles which still stand the test of time.

In the U.S. age 18 is the normal dividing line for adulthood (although there are certainly exceptions). Given the very serious repercussions that sex can bring--hello, having a child!--in general there is no good reason for the age of consent to be less than 18. I see zero reason to make it generally legal for, say 20-, 30-, or 50-year-olds to be able to do it with 17- much less 16 year-olds.

That said, most states have 'Romeo and Juliet' laws that provide an exception if the people are less than say two years different in age--which I think is very appropriate. I'm not for criminalizing, say, an 18-year-old high school senior doing it with a 17-year-old high school junior. But excepting age differences of less than two years is enough. High school seniors certainly should not be boinking high school freshmen.

No - I think it’s terrible that little girls were sent off to marry at the moment they became a ‘woman’

People might have mentally matured quicker back then, but it’s not like they had a choice. In Asia and Africa, marrying girls off early is still a huge problem. Just because a girl has begun her period does not mean the rest of her body is capable of carrying and birthing a baby.

I wonder if any other animals have age of consent laws. Us humans lead the pack
