Those of you with children, do you have family dinner time?

I grew up in a household in which we came to the table at nearly the same time each day to eat dinner as a family, and you were expected to be there. We talked about our days, what was going on at school, and enjoyed time together.

I admit I have not carried that into my own family today. Our evenings are spent playing on phones, transporting kids to soccer or dance or ball, watching tv, working in the yard and talking in passing. My kids grab stuff as they get hungry and rarely do we all sit down together unless we go out to eat.

Do you still eat as a family in the evenings? Is this a thing of the past?

I just take the mcdonalds big Mac meals to their rooms so they can eat without interrupting their fortnite game.

maybe 2-3x a week at most.

4 kids ranging from 3yo to 20 so they aren't all together very often and when they are we try to get them all to the table.

Same here growing up. At dinner, everyone was at the table eating and talking. Don't have a child now, but it would be the same.

I would if I had a family. But the single dad thing we kind of just eat while we do homework and stuff like that. Not many sit down meals with the kids. Not proper ones at least

Most nights, yes. The favorite part of my day is sitting down with my wife and 2 year old daughter and watching my daughter hold our hands and close her eyes when we say grace.

Is this the thread where the posters without children come to post about how to parent?

Family dinner is how we start our evenings. When I get home from the office the wifecand kids are setting the table for our dinner. The only exceptions are nights when we have softball or my son is at track or football practice.

When I was younger we always ate as a family and so did my wife. We don’t have kids, but we sit and have dinner every night at 7. I’d imagine when we do have kids we’ll keep doing the same thing. I have strong feelings against kids with tablets/phones at dinner. My brother’s stepson is the worst because of it.

Yes.

This is something that I have stressed.

We have all sit down at the table to dinner every night. No phones or TV or anything is allowed.

And we all go around the table and discuss our day.

This is something that I find to be very important and stress to my wife if/when we slip up on occasion.

This. My kids are in their early teenage years. A lot going on, and we don't really make organized meals as much anymore.

Probably 3-4 days per week we make them come eat and talk to us without distraction. But it's still always a battle.

ETA: I should clarify that the "battle" is 50% them and their electronics, and 50% me scrounging up the energy to actually cook the family meal.

We eat as a family every chance we get. Only times we don't are when I'm working too late to eat together.

If I get a job that has me home by 5pm, we'll eat together every night unless there's something scheduled. I don't think we'll ever be the kind of family that just eats separately because we're busy around the house doing different things.
