Yes, in front of a moving vehicle is the safest place to put yourself. It also gives an armed driver the best view and angle to shoot you which makes it even safer for the cop.

Maybe the guy was not trying to run over the cop, but make a clean get-a-way. It wouldn't matter, the cop had a very reasonable fear for his lifr once that car started moving slowly into him.
The cop did several stupid things in this situation that if he had done right could have avoided the shooting but bottom line the guy driving towards the cop should have known how it was going to end. Right or wrong everyone knows how that is going to end. The cop first off should have pulled in tight enough to not allow the car room to move. Thats a rookie mistake.
