Why is the opening scene showing someone strafing a neighborhood?

You do realize that during war it's pretty common for armies to occupy towns, villages, and even cities, right? These are commonly used as key defensive points, supply depots, and even unit headquarters for everything from platoons all the way up to army groups. They don't just stay out in the woods.

Yeah, we should have just let those Nazi bastards take over the world. I'm sure they had the best of intentions, they were just misunderstood.

For all you Millennials, that was sarcasm.

People really don't fully appreciate how screwed the Germans were at this stage of the game. The Luftwaffe in the West was effectively broken for good around April-May 1944 and was incapable of putting up much resistance outside of defending their own skies from the bomber raids. This left their ground forces completely vulnerable to roving fighter-bombers. Moving troops and supplies became an absolute nightmare. On top of this, Allied long range fighters providing escort duties were essentially given carte blanche to attack targets of opportunity on the ground on their way out. Make no mistake about it, these attacks absolutely killed large numbers of civilians from overzealous pilots but they caused immeasurable damage to the German war effort as well.

The resistance the Germans were able to put forth in spite of all this and what was transpiring on the Eastern Front is nothing short of remarkable. And to think that if the Ardennes offensive had not been launched, they would have been able to hold out with significantly greater strength. Of course it was ultimately a blessing in disguise because Germany was target number one for the atomic bomb.

My father had a college classmate who had been a P 47 pilot in WWII. He had intended to make the Air Force a career, but had a medical issue and had to retire, so he went back to college in the late fifties-early sixties. He told my dad, "I couldn't count how many civilians I've killed." The German army would use the roads alongside the civilians, and when they saw a military vehicle they would light it up, regardless of what was around it.

Hue was a different war. It was white, black and yellow.
