We still have a bunch of kids in rec type leagues, but I'd say the top 20% of players have moved to travel type leagues. A couple of my kids were definitely good enough to do that, but didn't want to give up other sports or a lot of entire weekends.

My theory is that none of my children will be professional athletes, the genetics just aren't there, so play as many sports and do as many different things as possible so you're at least average in everything. That's better for their lives going forward IMO.

but why does this even have to be in the equation? How about just doing what makes them happy, regardless if it's repetitive or exclusive

not possible...the OT is full of people with no kids but they heard it was terrible and even though you have a kid in it, you have no clue wtf you are talking about

we must roll the clock back 40 years and only play sports like the OT approves of!!!

The only hope for rec would be baseball gets so fricking expensive people have to come back.

The problem there is Grayxton's parents are still going to be there pushing the travel ball mentality.

That's part of it too, absolutely, I'm not saying it's not. But as a parent I will guide my kids towards what I think is best for them. My kids would've been happiest eating chocolate for breakfast, too.

But to be clear, I haven't told them they can't play travel ball sports. I do encourage them to try everything.

I guess you just haven't experienced a kid passionate about a sport. My kid walks in door and grabs his glove. He watches other random kids on youtube playing baseball. I never played baseball past 6yr old or had any burning desire for my kid to play baseball. My daughter doesn't want to do anything that would make her sweat. I am happy to foster a love for anything that isn't destructive.

Because kids genuinely aren't wired that way, that was even before social media, video games, and phones took over their already frantic existences. But hey, if that's what you think you got, good for you man.

his argument was playing with friends and rec ball was the way to do that.
you have a better chance of continuing to play with friends when you control the team you play on.
rec you have no control of who selects you on their team nor the dad ball coaching you randomly get every 6 months.
i'm not here to hate on the entirety of what rec ball is or isn't and some small benefits for some players but his entire argument is lazy and flat out wrong.

ever had a kid that even at 6 & 7 he sets an alarm on alexa to get up before everyone else to go hit before school? if not then you dont know wtf you are talking about.

you have never been around kids that want to be the best before if this is the way you think.

and yea im sure when i get home from one kids event at 8pm...the only thing i want more in life is to go have to hit with the other 2 at 8pm every damn night. Im sure its just me pushing them to be what i want them to be

What age group?

To be honest, Healing Place isn't bad. If you are looking for something easy going, 8-10 games in the Spring.

Traction has Rec as well. Generally 9 and under.

Istrouma for much less competitive.

Yes, and he still enjoys these things like most normal kids, but some kids are simply different. This is possibly the disconnect with most of the board because they haven't experienced what I am describing. My goal is to never turn my kid down when he ask to throw the ball. He begged me to go to cages when he got home from school yesterday. Last thing I wanted to do at end of the day yesterday, but had I said no he would absolutely resort to an extra hour of TV or video games. I know what I'd rather and spending the time with him is just a bonus.

Since when is meeting new kids and branching out socially as a 8-13 year old a bad thing? That should be a positive not a negative.

Sounds like parents want their social circle and keep it small. Again about the parents not the kids.

you understand that 90% of travel ball kids play other sports, at least until middle school. many play football all the way through HS.

Excuse my ignorance, but when I was younger there were 3 tiers of baseball leagues: National League (lowest), American League (middle) and Dizzy Dean (top). You would then play teams in the same tier from other playgrounds in your city.

Has travel ball taken away this format?
