but one could ague that local rec league baseball was a huge part of american culture in a way that basketball/cheer/dance/etc. never were and it's sad to see it fade into the abyss.
This. Leagues sponsored by the local municipality (and businesses) are great for the community, but terrible for certain egos.

Pitching machines should be used at that age like they were when I was a kid in the early 80s. The ball actually gets put in play every now and then and the players actual have to learn to field the ball and make baseball decisions. I coached my son’s rec team when he was 9-10 and it was ridiculous. We had 5 run rule and it was walk after walk after wild pitch after wild pitch until 5 runs were scored. Might see 10 balls actually hit and put in play the whole game. Rec leagues would develop and keep kids playing a lot more if they would go back to pitching machines for the 10 and under players. A bunch of idiots decided to have 9-10 year olds pitch and it ruined the overall development of players in rec ball.
Heck, that’s probably one of the reasons parents with above average players started travel teams. Had they left the machines pitching, the good kids might have stayed if they had the chance to rake every time they came to the plate instead of seeing 4 balls in the dirt or over the umps head. And they would have been able to actually play the field every inning. Taking away pitching machines destroyed rec ball.

The parents have no one else but themselves to blame. Memo: Your kid has .0000001% chance of ever making it to the big league. Let them have fun locally, and quit burning them out. Soccer is just as bad.

WTF is the board's obsession with travel baseball?
It the ridiculousness of it.. I'm 45 and travel ball was pretty unheard of when I was a kid.. now every fricking person I know that has a young child is doing travel something.. it's honestly insane

I’m way too far removed to remember how old I was during all of this. I remember playing t-ball, then coaches pitch, then pitching machine, then live pitching. How old was I during each of those stages?

Yep. Many of the coaches are a bunch of tools , who think it's game 7 of the world series.

What exactly is rec league?

Coach pitch was 7-9 year old range. Machines were 9-11. Pretty much a hittable ball every pitch.

Watching 8 yr olds play soccer is like watching midgets on acid chasing magic mushrooms hoping it will make them taller

Daddy ball is real. I’m bailing on these douches this week. Moving to a team with 2 paid coaches.

Age 5-6 was t-ball
Age 7-8 was coach pitch
Age 9-10 was player pitch
Age 11-12 we could steal bases, but no taking leads and the ball had to pass the plate before the runner could take off.
Age 13-15 was regular baseball rules. Could take leads, try to steal any time, pick off tries, balks, etc

I can imagine.. my youngest daughter who's about to be 13 competes in ballet and other dance genres... Those parents within our own fricking studio can be hideously deranged loons..

i don't think it's crazy to argue that the trend of kids "specializing" in certain sports and activities at younger ages isn't a great thing.
I read the other day-I don’t recall where-that an 8th grader had signed a contract for NIL money. In the fricking 8th grade. Jesus.

When i played rec league ball, all the teams knew each other around Metairie from school, etc. Coaches used to take us and get pizza after games. As a kid, that was fun. Now , many parents believe their children are major league prospects.
