This Delta variant thing

Forgive my potential ignorance, but how does one know if they have regular OG Covid or if they have this alleged Delta variant?
Is there some sort of test?
And are we completely sure this isn’t a similar but completely different virus made in China?

They take swabs and sequence them after the fact.

Our public officials can tell the public how many people are getting delta, etc etc, but the doctors can’t personally tell you what strain you have. I had covid late May early June, and want to know what strain I had.

Seems to me like the Chinese released this delta as a modified version to get those that had immunity to the first one
