Had a problem with brown water (as do all my neighbors and most residents in my town). Call City Hall. Open up all the faucets inside an out. I did. 20 minutes later:

This is water put into a clean dog bowl:

Even by our third world standards, there has to be a leak in the city's water line near my house (there is a fire hydrant 10 feet from where my meter is). My water lines are tight.

Comments from OT plumbers appreciated.

ETA: I know, 50's pink tile shower - but the tile work was perfect so it stayed.

even a small underground water leak will usually come up to the surface. Check for soggy spots or flowing water coming from the ground.

Odd thing is the way water pressure works you think it would be hard to get mud in, as the water would be forcing its way out of any leak.

What is the city saying about this?

ask your neighbor to check and see if his is like that too. If not, it's probably something f'd up under your house.

Looks like it has a lot of iron in it....

Is that well water, or city water....?

Did you try drinking it? It's probably fine to drink.

City water, and I'm in one of the nicer areas in town (one of the few left, frankly). They put in new lines, so the brown water is systemic.

The water settled back to light brown after the big flush.

Ponchatoula would be an enclave of fine estates compared to where I live.
