Latoya and NOPD can put all the police officers they can find on the streets but you can’t stop two people from killing each other. That needs to come from a complete culture change that I’m not sure is possible.

I don't care about them killing each other. I care about the cops not being able to stop them from killing me or my family.

I think the rate of murder is the worst it’s ever been for nola. Same for crime in general.

I recall the early 90’s and it was real bad. There were more people though. As bad as it was, I suspect that the rate was lower.

Strict gun laws absolutely do work. The leave the populace open to absolute tyranny and make self defense all but impossible, but they will bring the murder rate down through attrition if nothing else.

It would be really unfair to ask lawful citizens to give up their guns in New Orleans while criminals run wild knowing that they face little resistance from either police, the judicial system or the law abiding citizens.

Law abiding people follow the law. Criminals don’t.

That said, “ultimately” gun restrictions do work. Can we afford to wait for them to work though? For New Orleans, they could pass a law that outlaws guns and it would eventually work but there would be a period of time where crime would worsen as law abiding citizens would be sitting ducks as the lawless make hay.

Throw in a situation where there are less police than needed and it would be really chaotic for a while. Even more than now.

So for a strict gun control program to work, it’d take considerable fortitude from lawful citizens plus a big increase in police count and a reformed criminal Justice system that punishes criminals.

And if you drill down by zip code, the number gets even higher. Neighborhoods where one-two percent of the population gets shot in a given year. You might as well be on the Somme.

The numbers are for half the year so extrapolate to the end and we’re looking at a figure of @75 murders per 100,000 people. That’s high. The historic high was 1994 when it was just over 85 per 100,000.
We might get there.

Burglary, theft and assault are other areas that need to be discussed.
1989-1996 we had over 1,000 burglaries per 100,000. People fled the city in droves.

Where is BR though? I know we’re on that list. Are we just straight up not publishing figures at this point? Surely we’re top 5, right?

Memphis, Jackson, MS, a couple others.

I know Jackson was #1 in the nation last year, and already has 85 homicides so far in 2022. Keep in mind the city of Jackson is down to 160k population now. Truly wanton murdering and massacring everyday and yet it doesn't appear on these lists

the city recorded about 153 homicides in 2021, pegging the homicide rate at 99.5 per 100,000 residents. So far this year, the city has recorded 70 homicides, putting it on track to reach a similar murder rate by the end of 2022, according to WLBT.

Hol-e-frick

That’s insane.

That's incorrect. Homicides in 2021 were around 165 and are currently at 85 as of the 3rd of Aug.
