My car has push start, so I think leaving the keys in the back would work, after I buckle the car seat in.

Good advice though.

I hate hearing these stories. I know we have some heroes in this thread who are our collective Rock, but I feel sorry for the mother as well as for the kid.

This needs to be invented: a car seat with a sensor. The car seat senses when a child is in the car seat. There is an accompany sensor on the parent's key chain. When the sensor on the key ring is more than "X" number of feet away from the sensor on the child seat it beeps LOUDLY and vibrates as a reminder that the child is in the car. Seriously, does this not already exist???

I thought of the same thing and was so proud, oops. Most moms I know leave their purse in the backseat when they put their kid in the carseat so there is no way they can forget. I don't know if that is just an AZ thing or not but if everyone did that this would never happen.

In the link I posted earlier, there was a case where a man had a motion detector in his car. It went off three times while he was at work. Every time he peered out to look at his car there was no one around. He thought it was malfunctioning, and pressed the button on his remote to turn it off.

A long read, but worth it if you can make it through the whole thing.

I just tried to read that. Could not make it through. Sick to my stomach. Great, great writing on the part I did read, though.

I love how leaving something in the back seat, a briefcase, a gym bag anything is less practical/dependable than a message/call to your SO.

If we are talking about routines, wouldn't that habit just continue? Yeah, dropped him off, have a good day.

Yeah, a briefcase in the back seat is a pretty easy habit to form.

I don't see how it is even possible. I guess some people are so distracted by their thoughts and the drama of life that they simply cannot focus.

No kidding. How do you forget your kid?

Agreed. I already do this with my nursing bag and lunch bag. Nursing bag is a big tote bag that is just easier to grab from backseat vs passenger seat. It's routine and autopilot for me to immediately open door to backseat now when I get out my jeep.

Again.....you guys need to read the information about how this happens.

These are true accidents and not because the parents are shitty parents. It is about how our brains are wired when it comes to routines. And how one step out of the routine can domino into this horrific outcome.

Please research this more before being quick to judge these parents. It can and has happened to the most loving parents that would never intentionally hurt their kids. It's happened to even doctors and other highly educated professionals.

The ignorance and some of the comments displayed in here is quite disturbing. Again....it can happen to any parent....so don't think you are immune from it. Some of the posters in this thread have even admitted to close calls themselves.

Honestly, and I say this as someone who has never come close, but no matter if people want to admit it or not, your kids, the love of your life and the only reason for living, becomes a part of the routine over the course of days, weeks, months of the mundane. I'm not saying anyone here is susceptible to that kind of error, but most people dance on that line in their everyday life and may not even know it. Most people will have that focus trigger when a new step in the process occurs 100% of the time.

It's both impossible and easy to get it, imo.

The problem isn't the well-oiled routine. It's when the routine is off kilter that these things happen. It happens on the day that the SO is in the office early because their co-worker is out sick and the husband takes a phone call from his dad regarding his mom's cancer diagnosis and keeps driving to work. And that call never happens or goes straight to VM and no message is left.

We always do a safety check of the backseat after we get out of the car. After we had our little one we installed those rear facing mirrors so that when we check the rear view mirror we can see him in the back. It's scary to think about that happening to any parent

I can honestly say that I've never come close.

I don't think she should be punished, she has enough on her hands right now.

Dude, I don't think you understand the concept of law. A trial and conviction is society deciding the worth of an action. Most mistakes are irreleative of such a judgement. It's like your saying "oh, if she knew she was going to jail for 20 years, she woke to have let her baby girl die." fricking sick.

I often wonder if spouses ever work through these types of tragedies. I don't think I could, whether it was me being a total frickup or my wife, I don't think I could ever be around them again.

You serious, Clark? My wife would never have the chance to enter a plea--I would choke her out with the quickness. May not have meant to do it, but it's not revenge--it's the reconning.

And I don't buy this story for shite. I could maybe comprehend a 2-month old, but a 2-year-old is a little person, not a baby. They can talk. This may have been, premeditated like oil,boy in Atlanta, but at the very least she's got to get charged with negligent homicide. Even if she truly forgot and it was an "accident," certain acts have consequences. Whether there was intent or not.

What do you do? Put her behind bars for life so she doesn't leave another kid in the car?

Some punishments area meant to be deterrents. This would be for justice.
