You think I was spoon fed? Man you guys have such a narrow bandwidth. Everything is black or white, huh? This bootstrap myth just isn't true for most students anymore. Sorry you feel threatened by that fact.

You are the one saying something is a complete myth and not possible and now you chose to say most students with this post. Up until now you have been the person with the opinions that things are black and white.

Pretty ironic coming from the guy labeling anyone that doesn't provide all college expenses as a bad parent.

So only bad parents don't pay for all college expenses? Your public Ivy education taught you how to make all these sweeping generalizations?

It is my view that good parenting today involves paying for college. Many on this thread agree, if you read through the comments. I'm sorry you find that idea threatening, but it wasn't intended that way.

On a side note, perhaps you should take a step back and look at how mad you are getting over this thread. It is just a chat board buddy. Breathe.

Well that's missing the point. Online means you don't have to live in dorms, drive to school etc.

Then you are the one with the narrow viewpoint.

People in this thread suggesting it's bad parenting (not necessarily directed at you) are being ridiculous.

I guess my parents are bad parents according to them, because they didn't pay for mine, and told my youngest sister that since they had pretty much already paid for college tuition for 4 years to put her through the best high school in the area, they weren't going to pay for college.

And here I thought all the lessons they taught us on how to be good people and productive members of society made them good parents.

here is a difference between having a job and "paying your way" through college. I have argued this from the beginning. For the average college student, the idea that you can pay your way through college by working some shitty part-time job is 100% a myth that is perpetuated by older folks who did it when it was still possible.

This x 1000. Theres no way you're taking 15-18 hrs/ semester plus working a job where you are making enough money to foot the bill for your education. Has anyone priced out apartments in Baton Rouge lately? There are college apartments that have individual rents higher than my mortgage. Coupled with the fact that TOPS aint what it used to be and the cost of a semesters tuition at LSU plus fees and books, etc. But tell me again how you working part time a ChickFilA on nights and weekends is gonna cover all that.

The average college student makes terrible decisions.

There are plenty of ways you can make paying your way through college feasible.

There are plenty of ways you can make it impossible.

Yes, we agree, and that's what I said in the second half of my post. I'm granting you that point, and it is a good one.

Don't go to LSU then if you don't have any money and don't want to graduate with debt.

I wasn't calling you a name. I was stating a fact. You have the mentality of a child and you show signs of entitlement.

I have quite a few friends and acquaintances during school who paid their own way and fricked off HARD.

I had friends who had college paid for and they fricked off hard. 6 year plans. 2 transfers before completing the degree. They didn't take it seriously because it wasn't their money. Brilliant people who werent grown up enough to realize what they were meant to do in college (graduate).

quote:

I don't think you have to pay for your kid. If you can't afford it, you should still push them to go and they should find their way. But to say I'm not going to pay when I have the funds as some sort of lesson to the kid........useless.

You do you. I will do me.
I've got money for my kids. But I'm not spending it on college. God no.

The plan is for the kids to earn everything that they have and everything that they get. And when they are 30 with work experience and grit, I will make them business owners (they don't know this of course. I'm just a hard arse to them). One daughter gets a chic fil a franchise (obviously, she has to be approved. But that is the goal). My son wants to be in military R&D.

You get further in life by owning than renting. Once my kids find their place in this world, that college fund goes into their businesses (and not to brick/mortar universities studying beerology 101 and SJW economics).

Yep there are doers and complainers. Doers make things happen, complainers spend infinite resources explaining why things can't be done.

Oh please. I threatened your worldview, and you find it necessary to attack me personally rather than engage with what I'm saying. Par for the course, I guess, but being angry at me isn't going to change anything for you.

I had bad parents i guess........

Instead, they taught me that every dollar counts, and how to appreciate money. Paying for your own education doesn't have to just start when you go to college. I've had a job since I was 15.
