In the U.S., apparently not every dollar Opens a New Window. is equal. The value of $1 varies depending on where you go. According to new data Opens a New Window. compiled by 24/7 Wall Street from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), a dollar goes the furthest in America's "poorest states," such as Mississippi and Alabama. Overall, purchasing power is nearly 35 percent greater in The Magnolia State compared to New York, Forbes reported Opens a New Window. last year, citing 2016 findings from the BEA. In New York, $100 is worth only about $86.51, while $100 in Mississippi is valued at $115.74, the publication stated.

Mississippi: $1.16

Alabama: $1.15

Arkansas: $1.15

West Virginia: $1.14

Kentucky: $1.14

South Dakota: $1.13

Oklahoma: $1.12

Ohio: $1.12

Missouri: $1.12

Iowa: $1.11

Tennessee: $1.11

Indiana: $1.11

South Carolina: $1.11

Louisiana: $1.11

Kansas: $1.10

Nebraska: $1.10

North Caroline: $1.10

North Dakota: $1.09

Georgia: $1.09

Wisconsin: $1.08

Idaho: $1.08

Michigan: $1.07

New Mexico: $1.07

Montana: $1.06

Arizona: $1.04

Minnesota: $1.03

Wyoming: $1.03

Texas: $1.03

Utah: $1.03

Nevada: $1.03

Maine: $1.02

Pennsylvania: $1.02

Illinois: $1.01

Rhode Island: $1.00

Florida: $1.00

Oregon: $1.00

Delaware: $1.00

Vermont: $0.98

Virginia: $0.98

Colorado: $0.97

Alaska: $0.95

Washington: $0.95

New Hampshire: $0.94

Massachusetts: $0.93

Connecticut: $0.92

Maryland: $0.91

New Jersey: $0.88

California: $0.87

New York: $0.87

Hawaii: $0.84

No big surprises here really, but interesting how far your dollar goes depending upon where you live, and although I d say your dollar goes further in Mississippi for instance, the fact there not as many dollars to go around has a lot to do with the quality of life, or lack thereof .

It costs more to live in major cities or on a tropical island?

What will we learn next?

Question, shouldn't this come out to an even $1.00 if you add the difference from a dollar for every state?

I get $1.85. So, $0.85 more than an even $1.00.

If not balanced, why?

It's such a beautiful state but I don't quite get the high cost of living in Colorado. Even very small places like Durango (5 hours south of Denver in BFE) are stupid high.

You’d have to look at populations not just states

Fast growing place in the middle nowhere, great scenery..people will charge it and there are those who will pay it.

I personally wouldn't want to live right in denver, but even in boulder I'm sure is high.

Cost of living in CO is stupid right now. As much as I loved living just outside of Denver, it wasn’t worth the headache that came with it. Avg. 1 BR rent cost go up almost monthly have been for a while now. The problem with the company I worked for, as well as many others, are having issues increasing pay based on how quickly cost of living has gone up. At my final job review I saw how much the raise would be, or lack there of in consideration of COL, I decided to pack my bags and come back south.

ETA: as far as boulder goes the average home vale is ~750k.....in a glorified (but fun) college town. It’s truly obscene and wonder how long it can keep up.

I love Colorado but I'd probably have to consider a place like Colorado Springs if I lived there.

My buddy lives in Highlands Ranch and he said the pay is higher but not enough to offset the crazy housing costs.

Well, yeah it is. I'm trying to get there within a year but it's kind of turning me off price wise. The land prices are ridiculous. Like I said, even in BFE places like Ouray, Silverton, etc. All off grid land. I'll get there but with a bad attitude. I just want to go hike, pan for gold and drink whiskey. I don't ask for much!

I’m trying to tell you guys. I live like a king here in MS. Just don’t move to Jackson. You’re taking your life in your own hands.

If you want to live off the grid then check out the Marble area.

Ouray is my favorite place in CO. I just got back from a week in Glenwood Springs.

You can find places for decent prices around the Silt area.
