how can BR justify operating a much larger cab service if the demand just isnt there except for a couple of hours a day, a few days per week

interesting....so their model is ill-equipped to handle not constant volume.

it appears as if the UBER model is properly designed for that situation.

Seems like in this market, yellow cab is about to be destroyed.

Since Uber was added in ATL, I have found myself calling for rides at times of the day where I previously never would have used a cab. The convenience factor coupled with how cheap uberx is has really changed how I get around town, for the better.

i'm just trying to look at it from the other side of the coin

Agreed. An Uber driver could go to sleep at 9pm, wake up at midnight, and drive for 2.5 hours and get a few fares. Then go back to sleep. They work on their own time and it allows for you to work when there is actually rides to give. It's a much better business model for BR.

doubt it. I think YC makes most of their money off existing accounts. The drunks at 2am are not a priority

I have ridden in a lot of cabs and never seen a name as simple as Dick Jones. Know it's not his real name but made me laugh.

The drunks at 2am should be a priority for the city though. Those are the ones that end up waiting for a cab for an hour, say frick it and drive their truck home and kill people driving drunk.

UBER will cater to these clients. Yellow Cab will not.

Actually Yellow cab is my 2nd job. I have a 9-5er that I love to do. Same with cab. I could quit yellow cab but I like my customers to much to let them down.

Personally I think it fits because UBER drivers can decide just to work busy times when they will get immediate fares. BR doesn't use cabs unless you are drunk (for the most part) so I don't understand driving a cab full time in BR unless its to the airport.

So you noticed that a peak time of everyone wanting cabs is around 2am on weekend, yet yellow cab still only has 3 cabs running around town at that time? Make sense.

it will be much easier for UBER to handle this.

Doesn't make sense for YC to have a bunch of drivers for a busy couple of hours (for the drivers to make money...YC would make theirs anyway)...unless they gave the drivers a discounted rate to work the busy time of the night.

No the funny thing is most people never will use either but will still bitch and say how bad one sucks and how great the other one is...not based on their experiences but what they have read on this board.

True. In the NOLA threads people think it's just a NOLA issue and don't realize they have had issues across the globe.

Here is an interesting fare comparison:

Average price to Logan Airport per Massport website $25-$45

My Uber price this morning: $14.70, of which $8.75 was a Massport surcharge.

ETA: Uber picked me up in 3 minutes after I hit the button.

That's great! I want both companies to strive, but if you think yellow cab is doing a sufficient job without UBER, you obviously aren't paying attention. You are always in the cab and not waiting or trying to find one like a lot of us.

I enjoy parting a lot. And I am drunk all over this great city, and I never feel like it is easy to get a cab. When I do get a cab, I feel like I hit the jackpot.

I want this city to have both yellow cab doing it's thing and UBER doing it's thing. Together, I think these two companies can properly cover this city and keep drunks off the road.
