Here's my story of why i despise yellow cab.
This was about 3 years ago. I was out with some friends drinking at The Cove on a friday/saturday night. This was during the summer, and the bar was not very full. It's getting late, so around 1 i call up yellow cab. They say, they will be there in 15 minutes. So, we wait around out front of the cove for 20 minutes. Nothing happens, so i call yellow cab again. They tell me someone is on the way, they will be there in 5-10 minutes. So i tell the person on the phone, that we will be waiting inside, and to call when they arrive. We wait in the tap room (it was pretty empty) and are just sitting on the couches waiting. 30 minutes pass, and my buddy just says frick it, he'll drive because he wasn't very drunk. 10 minutes after we leave i get a call from yellow cab, that i ignore. They call me 2 more times and i ignore.
So explain something to me dick, why should i continue to support mass shitty service that is provided by yellow cab? You can blame the customers all you want, but when Baton Rouge, as a whole, largely despises yellow cab, it's no longer the customers fault. It's the company.

I think we agree about this point.
Yep.
I know uber has been running in other areas for a while but at what point will the government step in for their money grab?

I was in Jacksonville for the USA/Nigeria match a little while ago. They do not have a strong uber presence yet. I took an uber down to the game...no problems. Easy cheap ride...I think it was 16 bucks or so.
Ride back was with a cab. I hop in...tell him the hotel. He says he knows where that is and it will be a 20 dollar flat fee. I say great. He takes me to a bar that has a similar name and tells me to get to the hotel it will be 40 bucks. I get out without paying...I am now actually further away from the hotel than I started.

My only fear is that these crooked cab drivers will eventually end up working for Uber.

sorry man but that is kinda funny
I have only learned about uber over the course of the last week or so. I thought I read somewhere that the rates can change due to demand...true?

Yep.
Insurance companies have really upped their game in determining their risk. If they find out that you are in accident while doing any kind of pay for hire (exclusive of mileage reimbursement deal where the business has a GL policy) they are gonna straight up tell you to GFY.
If I was driving for Uber, even on a PT basis, I would look at this risk carefully.
All that said, the city gov shouldn't care about that since Uber does cover the passengers.

I have definitely noticed the uber drivers are getting worse in Atlanta. I don't think they make a lot of money though. I have not met a single uber driver that is able to do it full time.

so would I...especially with all the uninsured motorists in this state

No I was referring to some type of special inspection, test, license that they may say the drivers need just to collect some money

Yes, but it's not a surprise or anything. It pops up saying 2.5x or something. Then makes you type that you are agreeing to it.

They wouldn't last on a ratings based system

Yes.
Its classic supply/demand model. For big BIG weekends they could have surge pricing if enough people are requesting Ubers and there is a shortage of drivers. If people stop requesting the Ubers due to price, it automatically lowers.
Also, they warn you ahead of time that prices are way up so you can just not request one.

Über and ÜberX are not the same thing.
with Über you will get a professional driver with ÜberX you will get an average person with a car looking to make a few bucks
ÜberX is still better than a cab though

Give them bad ratings and they won't last. They will get canned from Uber. Use the system to make it better.

Depends. I've met a couple, but most just supplement income on nights and weekends (which is BY FAR the time most people needs cabs).

I went back and read all the OPs post....my god any conception or thought I had about cab drivers before....we're completely VALIDATED!!
"It's not out fault...it's the consumers fault!!"
"How date uber try and make the market more suitable for the customers!!"
"Omg the credit card machines work!!...we are just lying to you for cash, call us out on it duh! Bunch of idiots you guys are!"
"We need more regulations so that we can continue our monopoly and cartel like control over the market"
And the whole comparing cabbies to pharmacists

Seems like being an Uber driver would be a great way to meet chicks. Drunk chicks. Drunk horny chicks at 2am.
