The people we elect to make these decisions may be worse than the taliban. At least the taliban doesn't hide their true ideas

Same with welfare, climate change.

The issue is never the issue....

I have not been to Afghanistan. Is it not a desert? Do they have electricity and running water? Abundant Agriculture?

Yep, I have no faith in government. Zero, zip.

Politics requires narcissism and sociopathic qualities. That's who we continually give more power.

The beltway grows, accounts get fatter, but that's where it ends. DC is the most corrupt city on the planet.

Rainfall in Afghanistan is very scarce, and mainly only affects the northern highlands, arriving in March and April. Rainfall in the more arid lowlands is rare, and can be very unpredictable.[12] Marked characteristics are the great differences of summer and winter temperature and of day and night temperature, as well as the extent to which change of climate can be attained by slight change of place. The Afghan climate is a dry one. The sun shines for three-fourths of the year, and the nights are clearer than the days.

They have the physical resources. But it’s too diverse, and too divided on cultural, ethnic, religious, and tribal lines. There’s no sense of national identity.

Geography is a problem. The mountains divide Afghanistan.

Centinel I gather that you were there. Presume you saw lots of poppy fields. Tell us about it.

Surrender and capitulation, particularly leaving an enemy in possession of the battlefield often looks like this.

So many new members of Congress. Leave, let the Taliban take over, start another war, and in the next few years, congress (men/women) will profit millions.

Ah the great human lawnmower that is war. We can't stop because people have died, delegitimizing the reason for them dying in the first place. But if we continue more will die.

A friend suggested that Washington has adopted the Persian strategy, that they’re letting our rivals and the regional powers like India, fight it out in our place.

I’m so skeptical. We’re just not that smart. It’s easier to believe that there’s no plan.

I remember distinctly Jim Baker going to the White House to speak with Junior about his war plans in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He should have listened to the old man and never have let our wars ramp into nation building. 41 presumably sent Baker as they had sort of a family rule about 41 interfering in 45's business.

Bush and Rice were just wrong about both wars. I admire them for their management of the wars initial but their commitment to nation build was just wrong.

I thought we should have told the Taliban give us OBL or else. The "else" should have been nukes or the equivalent bombing with conventional bombs.

People seem to think the Taliban is not made up of Afghanis. Looks to me like they prefer the Taliban.

Strictly speaking, Afghanistan would be properly considered a Central Asian country - being a "stan" itself and bordering 3 other Central Asian "stans", plus Pakistan (Pakistan having 1 foot in CA and 1 in the Subcontinent), leaving its border with Iran the only thing that is remotely Middle Eastern/SW Asian.

However, your overall point about incompetent government in that part of the world (incompetent, corrupt and often tyrannical) is well taken.
