I lived in Ketchikan, Alaska for a year when I was a teen. While it was not far enough north to go though periods of either non-stop light or dark, as a kid from Alabama, it was still quite an adjustment.
During the middle of summer, the sun would be up before 5 AM and it wouldn’t get dark until like 10 or 11 PM. And for few weeks it wouldn’t really get all that dark.
The winter though was the opposite. The sun wouldn’t come up until after I’d already walked to school and would go down by the time I was walking home from school. And for a few weeks it really didn’t get all that light.
Winter sucked.

The sun has found its home in the western sky and it is now Saturday night in Utqiagvik, Alaska.

Good premise for a movie

They have armed polar bear watch during football games though.
I once worked with a doc that did locums up in remote areas of canada. He said that in the towns with polar bear problems, everyone kept their cars unlocked so people could jump in if confronted by one. Fascinating stuff.

Alcohol is illegal in Utqiagvik
Technically not true.
quote:
Alcohol Legality -- The sale of alcohol is illegal in Barrow and importation for personal use in your luggage is limited and controlled by a permit system. Without going through the permit process, you can bring in 1 gallon of beer, 1 liter of distilled spirits, or 2 liters of wine.
1 liter of bourbon doesn't last long during football season. I bet there's some smuggling going on too.

for real though, I would not be able to adjust to 24/7 darkness.

I would imagine.
a quick google search showed this...
quote:
The crime rate in Barrow, AK is significantly higher than the national average. The violent crime rate in Barrow is 43.4 while the national average is 22.7; and the property crime rate in Barrow is 52.4 while the national average is 35.4. This means that people living in Barrow are much more likely to be victims of a violent or property crime than people living elsewhere in the United States. As such, it is important to take extra precautions to stay safe when visiting or living in Barrow, AK, such as avoiding walking alone at night and being alert to your surroundings.
so no walking alone 24/7 for 68 days, ok then.

I dunno, I wfh some days and still need the natural light coming in through the windows.
I'm sure the ppl who live there are ok with it, some probs even embrace it as a badge of honor of sorts of being a resident there- but I couldn't do it.

Nah, they’re Eskimos. Nice try Eskimos.

Ketchikan can be dreary. It gets over 10' of rain and not a lot of snow.
Further north in the Panhandle you get the same dark times, but less rain in winter, more sun and snow. We're about 200 miles north.

Yeah. I still miss it though. I’ve traveled to a lot of places in this world. And in my opinion, Alaska is the most beautiful place I’ve ever see. For almost 27 years I’ve tried to talk my wife into us taking an Alaska cruise so she and the kids can see it at least once. Every years she and the kids want to go somewhere else. I think I’ve about worn them down though and hope we’ll do it soon.

I'm partial to Southeast, particularly the Northern Part. Its a fjordland.
