The first link the comes up on google features a young fresh 10th grade dropout with a dwi and drug charges who just became a pilot. His dad is a pilot.

A 4 year from a maritime academy such has those run by Texas A&M, and New York Maritime Academy is the minimum educational requirement, did he get in with a GED?.

I love people defending the "skill" involved. The average neurosurgeon salary is 380k, probably requires slightly more training and skill than river piloting.

Probably 12-15 years after high school to be a neurosurgeon, only 10 to be a river pilot.

4 years at maritime academy plus any additional time needed acquiring needed sea time to be eligible to take the coast guard exams.
Minimum of one year apprentice period.
Minimum of 4 years as deputy river pilot.

Hell idk. Im just quoting the article.

quote:

In fact, Grue dropped out of school after the 10th grade. He pleaded guilty to drunken driving in 1990 and was sentenced to 90 days in jail six years later for violating his probation. He tested positive for marijuana in 1998 and was forced into drug rehab. He got a high school equivalency diploma only last year, and he didn't get his first maritime license from the U.S. Coast Guard until 1999, giving him less experience than all five people he beat out when the job was awarded in April.

Still, Grue did have one vital credential the losing candidates did not: His dad is a river pilot.

All that said, some of the best boat drivers ive ever seen did a shite load of drugs back in their day. Its a unique industry with unique people. Im not advocating that we take them down or anything. I like that this kind of shite still exists. Gives me hope to one day be part of it

I have no facts but the "chemical industry" is almost assuredly corrupt as frick. So I the pilots take them for every cent

Aren't you already in the oilfield? You're already part of an extremely similar brotherhood

There is really no point in even advertising open positions, how many people walking around today without a job are even remotely qualified to be a river pilot? If you went to LSU and surveyed the current graduating class 99.9% would not know what a river pilot was, much less any idea of how to be come one.

You don't think that's a problem? A career that requires substantially less hours per week than most and has insane earning potential is limited to 50 or so families. Competition is non-existent.

Go to a maritime academy. There are 7 of them. You will learn all the things you need to know and meet all the people you need to meet in order to have a successful career in the maritime industry. The entire industry operates in much the same way. It's all about connections and developing relationships.

The industry operating that way isn't a major issue, but these associations shouldn't be monopolies. That's how they operate across the country, but it doesn't make it right. The Mississippi River pilots are in a league of their own though.

Your understanding of basic economics is terrible. The end user pays, this isn't coming out of corporate profits.

All that $$$ for knowing some currents and backing in a barge. Amazing.

They don’t back barges up, they do MUCH less. All they do is sit in the pilot house and advise foreign pilots in navigating the river.
Them asking for more money for travel is fricking ridiculous. Those guys get picked up at their home and driven to the ship, then picked up where the ship docks and brought home.

No wonder Ponamsky forged coast guard documents, he made tons of money for three or so years only to pay a $6000 Fine. Being a felon sure hasn’t seemed to affect him. Good deal, I guess.

Captains and mates locally dont care for the pilots
They basically just have to be present by law

Yep, they’re arrogant as hell, too. Seen these assholes come off of ships wearing shorts like they just enjoyed a nice cruise. My grandfather knew every turn of the river from the mouth to Cairo, Illinois and never had a chance to get this kind of gig. It’s a freakin disgrace. Congrats to Greg Bowser for fighting this.

Pretty sure that the pilots do all the handling of the vessel, the docking with tugs etc.

Where? In Alaska? I've been on an Alaskan cruise and the amount of traffic there is nothing like the river or Houston ship, channel. a captain that has never been there before is not equipped to handle that.
