Rome fell internally before the barbarians went past the gate.

We went on the clock in the 80's

Nah. Iterations of the Roman Empire existed until the 20th century. The idea of being Roman was also fairly widespread until the same time period.

People just like the convenience of using the 'barbarian' arguments because it's thought-terminating and allows them to blame whatever agrees with their politics.

I think that there are some very apt analogies. What are the dumb ones in your estimation?

Holy Roman Empire was a glorified city state at the trade nexus of the East and West, sorta like New Coke.

Rome was kaput in the West when the cray cray Senate allowed it to burn for personal gain over the strength of the citizens.

Countries and Empires fall from within long before they fall to the invaders. Usually when "court" becomes more important than reality. Last emperor of China had no clue as he never left the Forbidden City and had no clue what was actually happening. France fell when they were living the high life in court while the citizens could not get bread. English supported a monopoly and used their military to fight for a company that did not even call the UK home. Got embarrassed when dudes with spears beat them at war and the world lost respect.

That is the insight!

You need to stay at least a little bit hungry for clarity. Also need to stay grounded as soon as you think you are on top you have already started the downslide.

A huge part of it. But their slaves were citizens of places they conquered or people unable to pay their debt and were mostly white due to the geography. .

At the peak the Mongol empire was almost 5 times as large as the peak Roman empire.

They actually did change the climate because they left so much area with no people remaining in it so it reverted back to whatever natural wilderness existed before people.

One would have to be dumb to not see the parallels between the two republics.

You are elevating the Western Roman Empire for no real reason.

quote:

Countries and Empires fall from within long before they fall to the invaders.

Great, but then how were Roman administrative structures so resilient? Because, like I said, some of those administrative and cultural legacies remained up until the 20th century in some cases. You are referring to a bunch of generalized situations which don’t really add any clarity to your point either.

There was definitely a multiplicity of factors in the decline of the Western Empire, but for me it seems more true that empires fall because they lack the ability to adapt to changing contexts, which includes political, social and environmental changes. The rule is either to adapt or die.
