I'm with you on this one. I too am a millennial, one of the great ones. There are greats and there are failures in all generations. There are also those that bitch/whine and those that just suck it up and do. I think the fact that there is a platform, such as this message board, a facebook, or whatever, the bitching and whining seems to be more prevalent today. That may be why it seems like its more of a millennial thing, but in fact its just a coincidence. Lately its just been thread after thread of bitching and whining. Maybe its just time to get off the OT for a while.

My conversation about 2 hours ago with the new 26 year old secretary in my office:

Me: Let's get Chinese today. I have 2 clients coming in but I should be done by 1 at the latest. The place 2 blocks over delivers. (I put the menu on her desk and told her to get everybody's order.)

Her: Ok, cool. (she didn't even look up from her phone. )

Me (30 minutes ago): Hey, it usually doesn't take this long. Maybe we should check on the food?

Her: Oh yeah, I was waiting for you to finish up. That Chinese place isn't on waitr and they don't have online ordering.

Me: What are you talking about? Just pick up the phone, call the place and place the order. They deliver here on a bicycle all the time.

Her: Who isn't on waitr in 2017?

Me: This place. CALL them.

So...did you get your lunch?

Oh...and pics of the secretary. She hot?

-Faced the toughest economic times since the Great Depression

This only goes back to 1947, so it doesn't include the Depression, but it's inflation adjusted GDP per capita in the US. Our economic output per person has been mostly increasing for decades, from $13407 in 1947 to $52285 in 2017. Income inequality might be a point worth digging into, but it's laughable to make the claim that these are economically tough times. The economy is doing fine.

-Face much higher costs of living than any other generation

Another laughable claim. You can go to Target and buy all the cookware you'll need when you move out of mommy and daddy's house for like $30 bucks. It's absurd how many basics have come down so much in price. It is not more expensive to live today, there's just more shite to spend your money on. You don't NEED the Internet or a phone to live, you just think you do. I'm sure you can find charts telling you lots of things cost more than inflation adjustment says they should, but today's average house is not the same as 1920's average house. Again, things cost more because we have more shite to spend things on.

quote:

-Face record levels of student loan debt,

Going to college is a choice you made. I've been saying for over a decade that more people should have been going to community college and trade school. Going into massive debt to get a "college degree" that gets you a job making $35,000 - $50,000 a year is a dumb decision. Maybe your parents helped you make that dumb decision but it's still the result of a choice that was made, not some hardship forced on you from above. You know what Gen Xers fear? Paying into Social Security and Medicare all of our lives, something not done by choice, and then when we go to retire in 20 years the money the government stole from us will be gone. That will probably screw you some too, but you'll have paid a lot less into the system so it will hurt less.

quote:

Carry less credit card debt than previous generations.

You probably don't need to pay for as much with credit cards when you buy stuff with your student loan money.

quote:

Willing to work multiple jobs to make ends meet.

Technology is changing business and industry at a faster rate than ever. That's not something you're choosing to do because you're awesome, that's something you're having to do because technological innovation cannot be stopped.

quote:

Fought the longest war in this country's history

I've never served in the military but even I know this is greatly disrespectful to people who fought and died in much worse conflicts that the War on Terror. And I'm not belittling the current efforts of our Military, but I think most soldiers today would rather do 2 tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan than 1 tour of duty in past wars other than Gulf War 1.

I'm not saying Millennials are terrible, but this is a very poor argument supporting them. Every generation thinks the ones that came after them are worse because from their perspective they are. But it's really more about being significantly different than better or worse. The world changes so humanity changes with it. Millenials and Gen Xers both would be heading back to the time machine after 10 minutes of no AC, no running water, and minimal bathing if we went back to the early 1900s my grandparents grew up in. By the same token my parents have problems answering a voice call on their iPhones.

We all have different skill sets that we develop in response to the world around us. Millenials may not know how to drive a stick shift, but they don't need to. They may not be able to get a job, but that's ok too. You guys are going to get paid by the government to entertain each other while the robots do most of the work. Those of you that want more than a basic life in a Wall E hover chair will probably still not "work" as much as create. You'll teach the robots and AI how to do new things.

That's the world we are all headed for and Millenials will be uniquely equipped to navigate it until the next shittiest generation comes along to take humanity to the next step.

I don't have any student debt, but a lot of millennia's do. It's very tough now a days to work enough to make enough to pay tuition+ living costs as a student. Louisiana makes it easier with TOPS, but in a lot of states it's just not feasible to work enough to fully cover tuition with a part time/summer job.

Nah, I specifically told her to have it here by 12:30-12:45 when the rest of the staff usually eats.

Millennials catch a lot of unwarranted shite. It's actually pretty funny in my opinion. We live in the greatest era with the most potential opportunity. Fortunately, for the most part, our generation hasn't had to live through a significant war. Because of this we are undoubtedly softer than generations who had to live through bullets buzzing past their face in the middle of Europe, Korea, or Vietnam. It's cause and effect.
