Reading on The Advocate regarding JBE and his wanting to empty death row the poll says 52% oppose his plan, 41% support it while 8% are undecided. (Their numbers add up to 101% but whatever). Then the line "The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.46%". If you can be that precise on the margin of error then why should there be any margin of error? Other than your original math which adds up to 101%?

Polls are stupid.

I don’t know anyone who has ever participated in any sort of poll.

Margin of error represents the sample size vs a population.

It is called rounding. 51.6 goes to 52, 40.6 goes to 41 and
7.8 goes to 8.

Not sure if it’s still the case, but those mandatory ISDS statistics classes for the LSU business school 20 years were the worst.

Our country is so bad at statistics and generally understanding data.

It makes it really easy for people to misuse it

I support emptying death row by killing everyone on it immediately

Reminds me of a Weekend update clip with Norm Macdonald on women drivers.

Release drug possession-only prisoners (not paired with violent/property crime). You have plenty of room to house the monsters.

It adds up to 101% only because they rounded. Without rounding, it's 100%.

Margin of error is a normal part of polling; every poll has a margin of error.

I wouldn't recommend coming to Tigerdroppings with questions about statistics. You won't find many answers here.
