Best ways to argue

quote:

The best way to argue is to take on your opponents’ strongest arguments, not their weakest ones.

quote:

And yet, I would add something to his analysis: ad hominem is a problem, but if you watch cable news, or follow Twitter, or reflect on the way that Donald Trump engages with Democrats, or Democrats with other Republicans, you notice a style of argument every bit as pernicious. It consists of constantly elevating the very worst of the other side, attacking only the weakest rather than the strongest part or version of the ideas held by the other political party or ideological tribe or cultural identity group.

If you removed all of the invalid arguments from the poli board there wouldn't be any poli board.

First people need to understand the difference between a philosophical debate and argument. In today's day and age, 99% of people debate to "win", not to increase knowledge of both parties. Just listening and reading arguments, people have no idea what the hell logical fallacies are either.

My personal favorite is the new version of political debate, pure hyperbole and "WELL THE OTHER SIDE DID IT" are literally 70 to 80% of all arguments. It's one thing to be used by an unbiased party to point out both sides are hypocrites, but the true believers have taken that argument and warped it into a constant spewing.
