When you’re younger I think you have a more idealistic idea of who people are because the residuals of childhood cause you to view them as who you like to think they are instead of who they really are. Time and experience causes you to trust fewer and fewer of them as you age to the point where I can seriously list maybe a handful of people that I actually really trust, a dozen more I trust but verify, and a whole arse load that I really don’t trust at all.

I really only have my husband and myself on the trust implicitly list. Everyone else is either trust but verify or never trust at all.

Spent my first 20 years in Louisiana and fully agree with this. Some good people, sure. But also some gravely ignorant as well.
I’ve been living in Cali for the last 20 years and in general find that people respect others more out here. They leave you alone when you want to be left alone and, contrary to popular belief, don’t tell you how to live your life. The state government tries to, but random people don’t. Southerners will stand in your face and tell you how you should live your life when there is nothing in theirs worth emulating.

My husband and I are looking to get out after my kids are out of HS. But I want someplace less populated and specifically less populated by the wrong kinds of people.

Countless spots out west for exactly the scene you’re looking for. While I hate the politics out here, the quality of life is unbeatable IMO.
