Because they became status symbols for people to wear in warm weather climates when they aren't really status symbol quality.

The quality is a lot better than Columbia. I've owned both and its a noticeable difference.

ahh. thanks.
I only bought one when I moved to a cold area. I thought they were good at keeping me warm / dry without being very bulky. They aren't status symbols where i live so maybe that is why I missed out on the trend.

This. I have a North Face parka. I bought it while I lived in Boston last year. I only cared about being warm and not making a fashion statement.

I am sure a lot of jackets mentioned in this thread are equally sufficient. I was fishing in the Arctic with a Lands End fleece and a North Face soft shell and had no problem.

There's a lot of brand loyalty to North Face in the south. They are ok, but I've had a comfy Quiksilver jacket for years that looks great and keeps me warm. I mean it doesn't get THAT cold down here. Usually 30-60 degrees in winter

Are people really shitting on North Face in here? I have a Goretex shell that I bought ~10 years ago and it is still in perfect condition and stops every breath of wind and rain. Sure a lot of people wear them, but they are quality jackets and seemingly not near as expensive as they used to be. I'll continue to buy because they work, not because they make me fit in.

I wear what I get for Christmas. Haven't gone out and bought a winter jacket in 20 years. My MIL has bought me north face jackets the last 4 years. Still have one with the tags

I live in the Pacific Northwest. Having a North Face jacket is almost a requirement here.

It's great for being water resistant and light which is good for it's always drizzly and doesn't get too cold up here. I have a heavier Columbia coat if it getting nippy. I've had Patagonia in the past and that stuff is great too.

We still have an old Mighty Ducks one from the 90's. It has really held up, just needs to be cleaned. If i ever want mad hipster cred when it's cold, i bust it out.
