That kind of unity only existed during and immediately after WW2. This narrative you are telling simply isn't true for most of American history.
1930s - The socialist challenge was real, but now forgotten.
WWI - Most people didn't want anything to do with that war. It certainly had little to do with the freedom of our citizens.
Spanish-American War - A war for rich imperialists. It benefitted our citizens, sure, but had nothing to do with freedom. In fact, we stopped a bunch of Cubans and Puerto Ricans who were fighting for freedom.
Civil War - Half the country fought the other half, then occupied it for 20 years afterwards. Hatred still lingers.

Why exactly do you think they are kneeling?

I'd love to put the kneelers on the spot and ask them what policy change would satisfy them and get them to stand again.
I guarantee that in most cases you'd get a blank stare or a lot of stammering, but no answer. They just think they're being cool and edgy.
