I've done both. The one I liked the best was at a smaller CPA firm. We were salary, but got OT at 1.5 for anything over 40. It made busy season more tolerable when I pulled a 65-70 hour week for 2 straight months. We would usually ramp up and do a month at 50 hours a week, then up to 55-60 depending on workload, and max out around 65-70 for a few weeks. And in the summer when you didn't have much work to do you still got salary. Of course we were still there 40 hours a week, but that time was spent on catch up work and mandatory training. Non-chargeable time but still getting paid.

Now I'm strictly salary, but there isn't much OT here. I'll work the occasional late night or have periods where I work through lunch and stay an hour or two late, but that isn't common. Plus there isn't any travel so no matter how late I work I'm going home to my family.

Well , i had more freedom to get personal business done during the day when I was salaried. I worked more hours on salary then was expected of me which i didn't mind but those hours weren't documented so it wasn't ever noticed by my supervisor.
When it was time to cut hours, i made the same for a while but eventually all salaried employees were cut a certain percentage.

Salary gives your employer the chance to frick you over by wanting you to work ridiculous hours, weekends, etc.

It depends on the salary and hours you work

and how the salary works. I'm salaried but still get paid overtime which is nice, it boosts my take home pay by about 10%.

Also, most hourly jobs don't give benefits though it seems more companies are providing them.

I posted asking this very question not long ago since my employer was considering moving me to salary. The change has been great for me. They raised my pay enough that I am making more on a regular basis than pay periods when I clocked OT. It's also been nice to not have to punch the clock or lose money when I have to leave early or roll in a little late.

I’ve worked both. They have pros and cons.

Hourly is great because of overtime. Salary is great because I can run to the doctor or take a long lunch without having my paycheck affected. Some days I wish I worked hourly (if I have to work late into the night), other days I’m glad as hell I don’t work hourly.

I can’t believe some of you actually think this is a legit debate.

I do think it is.

I currently am self employed by the hour, but in negotiations to go salary (w2). We aren't even to the money angle and it is pretty tense.

My entire life up to this point was salary (for professional positions).
