If I could summarize my advice in two words those would be "Don't settle!". This is 2016... there are plenty to choose from, in a plethora of styles. So, don't shortchange yourself. Insist upon:
Quiet - it should do the job and not distract you while you're working on something else.
Promptness - does it "hop to it" when you press the button? Does it provide a quick turnaround on your needs?
Efficiency - it should be simple to operate but not cost much to keep around.
Loyalty - it should give you that feeling that it was made just for you, and wouldn't have that special fit with anyone else.
Good looks - if it might embarrass you when seen by a neighbor you should shop for something more impressive.

Who are you, Betty Crocker? How many appliances do you have?If it can't be cooked on the grill or cooled in a refrigerator, I don't need it.

I don't give a rats asre about what other people think about my appliance choice. Funny thing is OP missed the 2 most important must haves:
Reliable
Energy efficient

Huh?
I don't give a damn if my dishwasher works great for other people.
As long as it works well, is quiet, and doesn't break.

Not following you on this "must have"; isn't loyalty a human trait?
