Very cool stuff but there's no damn way I'd be in that sub.

Apparently none of them have seen Pacific Rim, because this is how you release the kaiju

I would have pissed myself when the plexiglass window on Trieste cracked at 30,000 feet on the way down.

frick every bit of this.
Will be awesome video though.

Gonna be very interesting to see. Not even sure if they have multicellular life that far down. If they do we can't bring it back (it will become misshapen when exposed to light or non bottom of the ocean water pressure).

It's utterly amazing the technological advances that are now here for these depths to be explored.

Had a buddy that was a helmsman of a sub, they have a depth finder in front of his wheel. Said when they went over the Marianas trench, it would fall to the bottom, then start working again once they passed over. He said it was the craziest thing he had ever seen.

I hope Toshi survives this time.

This would make me incredibly uncomfortable

If any window or hull fitting were to actually fail you would not have to worry about drowning, or being crushed by the increased pressure, you would be incinerated first. The almost instantaneous increase in air pressure to that of the incoming water pressure would cause the air in the sub to super heat to thousands of degrees incinerating everything in the sub before the sub is crushed.

Holy shite is this true?

if it's on the internet, it has to be true

Not really sure about this. We run electronics and lithium-thionyl chloride batteries up to 30,000 psi and 200 deg C without explosions. Unless of course the lithium comes in contact with water.

The amount of Xanax I would have to take to even board that sub would be enough to put me to sleep.

The thought of that depth kinda gives me anxiety, I think I have a pinch of claustrophobia.

It is what killed the crew of the nuclear submarine USS Thresher before the hull was crushed. it is believed a hull fitting failed letting the inside pressure climb to water pressure super heating the internal air.
It is easy to figure out with the Combined Gas Law
P1V1 / T1 = P2V2 / T2
Lets say the volume of air in the sub V1 is 100ft3 (doesn't matter what it really is it will be a constant), P1 is surface pressure of 14.7 PSI, and we will assume T1 is a comfortable 70 degrees.
At 30,000 feet below sea level the water pressure is about 13,300 PSI this will be P2
Setting V2 equal to V1 we solve for T2
100 x14.7 /70 =21
21 = 13,300 x 100 / T2
T2 x 21 = 13,300 x 100
T2 = 13,300 x 100 /21
T2 = 63,333 degrees F
Feel free to check the math.
